Going big and taking The Rafa Challenge…

There are four tournaments on the calendar this week, but we’re starting in Spain. Play starts in Barcelona at 10am Monday, so I’m getting our first pick of the week out to you now.

As ever, we’re sticking to our guns and going for the big prices…

World No.1 and undisputed Clay Court King, Rafael Nadal is the 1/2 (1.50) favourite to defend his crown. Rafa is the two-time reigning champ here, and has won Barcelona 10 times.

Last week, Rafa won the Monte Carlo Masters for a record 11th time, and did so without dropping a set. In fact, he’s currently on a streak of 36 sets in a row on the clay. Scary stuff. He was odds-on at 8/13 (1.62) last week, and goes off at 1/2 (1.50) this week.

As with Monte Carlo, our plan is to look for a big Each Way price on the opposite side of the draw to Nadal. We didn’t find that man last week but the tactic was correct – 66/1 Kei Nishikori ended up the runner-up to Rafa.

With the bookies skimming the Each Way terms to 1/3rd odds for reaching the final for these Rafa-led events, we want to be going after prices that allow for a healthy ‘place’ payout.

Rublev ready at 100/1...

One of our Ones to Watch in 2018 youngsters catches the eye at as big as 100/1

Last week in Monte Carlo, Andrey Rublev took a set off French Open second favourite (behind Nadal), Dominic Thiem. The Russian – still just 20 years of age – has made one final already this season, as well as two other quarter finals.

Last season Rublev won his maiden ATP title, lifting the trophy on clay in Umag, Croatia.

This is a young player worth following at large prices right now; if all goes to plan for Andrey, the current World No.33 is destined for the Top 10 before long – and beyond.
