Siegemund starts well in Stuttgart...

Laura Siegemund made a winning start to the defence of her WTA Stuttgart title last night...

The German beat Barbora Strycova 6-4, 6-3 to land our Match Winner bet at odds of 5/6 (1.83).

The hapless Strycova has now lost 5 matches in a row.

For Siegemund – aiming to step up her comeback from a 10-month injury layoff – her clay-court prowess seems to be thankfully still intact.

As we noted earlier this week when backing Siegemund as a 40/1 Each Way pick in the Outright Winner market, 75% of the German’s career match wins have come on clay.

And here at her hometown event in Stuttgart, the 30-year-old – currently ranked No.100 in the world – has a fantastic record...

After last night’s 1st Round win, Siegemund has now won 12 of her last 13 matches in Stuttgart (including qualifying rounds). She won the tournament last year, and was runner-up in 2016.

Our 40/1 pick is now 20/1.

Things will get tougher from now on in, with the Stuttgart draw full of big names – World No.1 Simona Halep sits in the top half of the draw with Siegemund, as does No.4 Elina Svitolina.

Halep has a tricky looking match this evening, taking on Magdalena Rybarikova – who knocked our friend Daria Kasatkina out in the 1st Round in straight sets.

Next match tomorrow...

Next up for Siegemund is World No.16 Coco Vandeweghe. The American won their only previous meeting, which was on clay last year (coming just a few days after Siegemund had an energy-sapping run to the Stuttgart title).

In general though, like many American players (no American has ever won the Stuttgart title), Coco is not at her best on clay – with just 31 of her 287 career match wins coming on the surface (11%).

Compare to that Siegemund’s record with 353 of her 469 match wins coming on clay (75%), and a 66% win record on the surface. Vandeweghe’s match win strike-rate on clay is 47%.

Siegemund v Vandeweghe is yet to be scheduled but is likely to be a late afternoon or early evening match on Thursday – placed high on the Stuttgart order of play, on centre court to get the maximum crowd, with ‘prime time’ billing for the German player. The match will be live on BT Sport, too.

I’ll be back on Friday with our next look at the tennis. By then, this week’s four clay-court tournaments in Stuttgart, Barcelona, Istanbul and Budapest will all be at the quarter final stage, and there could be a match betting opportunity or two for us.

Enjoy the tennis,

Best wishes,
