The road to Paris…

May and the French Open are fast approaching. There are four more clay-court tournaments on the calendar this week, as the build-up to Paris continues…

The men are in Germany and Portugal for ATP Munich and ATP Estoril.

The women are in Morocco and the Czech Republic for WTA Rabat and WTA Prague.

Another runner-up…

We’ve got five pre-tournament picks into finals so far this year, and four of them have finished runner-up.

For the second time this season, we got Daniil Medvedev into a final at a decent price – but had to settle for the Each Way place payout…

After the fast-rising Russian finished a 14/1 runner-up for us in Brisbane in January, Medvedev was our 20/1 pick in Barcelona last week.

Daniil had to settle for the runner-up trophy once again, well beaten by Rafael Nadal’s conqueror & heir apparent to the Clay Court King’s throne, Dominic Thiem.

For the second tournament running, Nadal went off as the massive Outright favourite and failed to make the final.

It was the same for Alexander Zverev, who was 2nd seed in Barcelona last week. He fell at the first hurdle. The German, ranked No.3 in the world, will be looking to do better this week…

Zverev is the two-time reigning champion in Munich. The bookies make him just 11/4 (3.75) to defend his title, despite a stuttering run of recent form that’s seen Zverev fail to string two consecutive match wins together in any of his last five tournaments.

WTA Rabat – Su-Wei Hsieh at 16/1…

Another short-price Outright Winner favourite with patchy 2019 form is Elise Mertens, who is 11/2 (6.50) in general to defend her title in Rabat. The Belgian is played 2 lost 2 on clay so far in 2019.

In the opposite side of the draw and for bigger prices, odds of 16/1 and 14/1 Each Way appeal in Morocco…

At the age of 33, Su-Wei Hsieh has reached a career-high ranking inside the Top 25.

That achievement comes courtesy of a strong period of form & consistency since last autumn, with five semi final appearances or better from her last 15 tournaments.

As we mentioned when backing Hsieh at outsider prices in the bigger WTA Miami event in March, Su-Wei is one of the trickiest and most skilful players on the tour. She beat Grand Slam champions and current & former World No.1’s Naomi Osaka and Caroline Wozniacki in Miami.

Hsieh made the semi finals here in Rabat last year, only beaten by eventual tournament winner Mertens. They can’t meet until the final this time, with Mertens top seed and the player from Chinese Taipei the 2nd seed.

Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook think Hsieh is on course for the final here. They make her just 5/1 for the trophy. Other firms are double figures, with a top price of 16/1
