Tennis Betting Advice - April 2023
Back a Barcelona upset - and a 66/1 youngster in Stuttgart...
Monday 17th April 2023
We did some good big-odds price-grabbing on Monday morning. And I've got a couple more for us to snaffle up before Tuesday's tennis gets underway...
In the snooker World Championship, 22/1 Mark Williams and 16/1 Mark Allen won their 1st round matches at the Crucible on Monday, and are now priced at 14/1 and 11/1 at best, respectively
Our Monday AM work went to plan in our tennis business, too. With WTA Stuttgart Ones to Watch pick Qinwen Zheng coming through her 1st round match in straight sets, saving the sole break point that she faced on her own serve.
After that win out on Court One, Zheng stated that she'd like her next match to be in "the big stadium." And it will be: taking on world no.1, reigning champion & top seed, Iga Swiatek... The 20-year-old from China replied in just the way you want an ambitious young player to: "That's okay. I like challenges."
William Hill's 66/1 didn't last long. Hopefully you got on at the more widely available 50/1. As I write late on Monday night, Qinwen Zheng is now 33/1 at best in the Outright Winner betting for Stuttgart (Bet365, William Hill).
A slap on the wrists this week for Skybet, Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook, who are going with reduced Each Way terms of 1/3 odds for 1-2 places. Elsewhere, the standard and preferable 1/2 odds terms are generally available
Talking of ambitious young players...
I can't be having Ben Shelton as a 5/1 (6.0) or 9/2 (5.5) underdog to beat Casper Ruud in Barcelona on Tuesday...
The clay-court bias is being exaggerated here, if you ask me.
Young Ben is the real deal, has beaten Ruud before in their only previous meeting (on hard courts). And given how uninspired Ruud seemed in Monte Carlo last week - at a tournament where I'd backed him to do well. The 20-year-old American can replicate what Jan-Lennard Struff did to the Norwegian last week: come out firing with aggressive, attacking play.
Up to a new career high of no.37 in the world, Shelton has the forehand, energy & self-belief to do it. Let's take the underdog at a nice price in the Match Winner betting.
And back in Stuttgart at this week's women's clay-court event...
We're on Qinwen Zheng at fancy outsider odds in the top half of the 'Porsche Tennis Grand Prix' draw. In the bottom half, going on price as well as potential, the one I like as a young and improving Ones to Watch contender is Anastasia Potapova at 66/1...
The 22-year-old Russian is having a good season, up to a new career-best no.24 in the world. Winning a second WTA title (Linz). And also reaching the quarter finals of the prestigious Miami Open. On clay, Potapova won Istanbul last season, and made another two semi finals on the red stuff - including one here in Germany (Hamburg).
Add in the fact that this Stuttgart clay event is played under a roof, and has a history of rewarding hard-hitters (for example, famous grunter Maria Sharapova once won this tournament three years in a row. More recently, ball-thumper Aryna Sabalenka has been runner-up two times running...). And young Anastasia - who is 7-1 for matches won 'indoors' so far in 2023 - could emerge as a dark-horse contender this week. Odds of 66/1 and 50/1 certainly fit the bill for you & I to get involved.
