WTA Madrid: Ones to Watch at 33/1 and 100/1...
Wednesday 23rd April 2025
Some late night/ early morning business for us in the women’s Madrid Open, which continues with the 2nd round starting at 10am Thursday, UK time…
Following on from Tuesday’s in-depth men’s preview, I need to be more swift and succinct with your women’s Madrid picks - in order to hit the Outright Winner markets while we can, before play resumes in the morning…
Not all the bookies are up as I write on Wednesday night. But without further ado. Three players I like at the prices for WTA Madrid:
The 23-year-old American is at a career-best ranking of no.16, and having something of a renaissance/ coming of age this season.
A former French Open semi-finalist as a teenager back in 2019, Anisimova has always said she liked the clay. More recently, she made the quarter finals here in Madrid in 2022 - and the semis in Charleston in her most recent event this month.
Amanda has made the finals in two of her last six WTA 1000 events. Powerful ball strikers have a history of doing well at this tournament. Anisimova fits the bill as a dangerous outsider.
Last year’s ‘surprise package’ French Open finalist (we were on her at huge odds), Paolini loves the clay. She’s never been as far the quarter finals here before, but then again, all those previous Madrid visits came before Jasmine made the huge Major breakthrough last year (also made the finals at Wimbledon). The 29-year-old is now a top 10 player (currently no.6). She started her 2025 clay season with a semi final in Stuttgart last week. Paolini continues to be underrated at odds of 40/1 and the like, in my opinion.
Last but not least, a 100/1 Ones to Watch youngster for us to get excited about. The 21-year-old Russian is already no.13 in the world, and with four WTA titles to her name (one on clay). A former Girls’ French Open semi-finalist, Shnaider has all-court abilities - with some deft shots and mix-it-up tactics, along with a powerful lefty game. Having recently teamed up with two-time Roland Garros runner-up Dinara Safina, Diana might be ready to kickstart her 2025 season and spring a surprise.
