Madrid update: Tummy bugs and tournament chances...
Monday 27th April 2026
The Mutua Madrid Open is into its decisive week, and while our two women’s picks have fallen by the wayside, the men’s event still holds plenty of promise for us…
In action in the 3rd round this afternoon and evening, we have Francisco Cerundolo and Jakub Mensik in action. Both went in the book last week at top recommended Each Way prices of 80/1.
The round of last 16 starts on Tuesday, and our two other ATP Madrid selections are already there, and now looking to make the quarter finals…
Arthur Fils (33/1 – now 10/1) is continuing to play great stuff on his comeback from injury (he says he’s playing better now than before)…
And Jiri Lehecka (in the book at 80/1 or 66/1) is also proving a threat again at Masters 1000 level, with both men displaying some remarkable ball-striking control and power.
Some key stats regarding our boys:
One of the Top 2 is missing…
With Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz pulling out before Madrid started, and now also confirmed to miss his title defence at next month’s French Open (wrist injury). The men’s game is suddenly looking a lot more open for the outsiders…
While world no.1 Jannik Sinner is of course still the man to beat, he can’t be on both sides of a tournament draw (!), so the door is very much ajar for big-odds underdogs to reach some big finals in the weeks ahead…
Sickness in the air…
Madrid has also been struck by a batch of illness withdrawals, with several players dropping out due to the bug going around. And other struggling on, such as Coco Gauff winning her last match despite vomiting courtside.
Marin Cilic withdrew citing food poisoning. Coco says she thinks it’s more a virus doing the rounds in the city. Whatever it is, so far, our men’s picks appear to have dodged it. Fingers crossed.
Play continues in Madrid as I write, live on Sky Sports. With the Rome Masters to come next week…
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
