Cincinnati update…

As anticipated, Serena Williams has pulled out of the WTA Cincinnati draw. That’s good news for our 28/1 pick Sofia Kenin, who now faces a ‘softer’ 2nd Round match on paper than had otherwise been expected.

Kenin put in a fine performance to take out the dangerous Julia Goerges last night, beating the German 6-4, 7-6.

It was also great to see Kenin playing without the strapping that she’d had on her leg at the end of Toronto last week.

Injuries and US Open ‘precautions’ have struck elsewhere, though…

As well as Serena pulling out – and last week’s Rogers Cup champions Bianca Andreescu and Rafael Nadal opting to sit out Cincinnati – our 40/1 pick Amanda Anisimova has also pulled out of this week’s tournament. Outright Winner bets on Anisimova should be void if using our recommended bookies.

In the ATP Cincinnati event, our 80/1 outsider Taylor Fritz was edged out in a close match against another of our recent weekly picks; David Goffin taking it in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Our 28/1 shot Kenin is left flying the flag for us this week then, with bookies now making the 20-year-old American 16/1 in general.

  • Kenin is a 4/11 (1.36) favourite to beat Zarina Diyas in the 2nd Round tonight (10pm+ UK time, BT Sport)

Back the teenager today…

Sticking with the young players, 18-year-old Iga Swiatek catches the eye today, priced as the underdog to beat Anett Kontaveit…

Swiatek has come through qualifying this week, then won her third Cincinnati match in a row by beating the higher-ranked Caroline Garcia in straight sets in the 1st Round proper.

The Polish teenager is making her mark on the tour this season, including a first WTA final when finishing runner-up in Lugano in April.

Iga was impressive in reaching the 4th Round at the French Open. And last week on hard courts she won four matches to come through qualifying and get to the 3rd Round in Toronto.

In her last eight matches overall, Swiatek has only been beaten by current World No.1 Naomi Osaka.

Up to a career high of No.55 in the rankings, Swiatek has the confidence and strong-hitting game to turn over the dangerous but inconsistent Kontaveit today…

The 23-year-old Estonian, ranked No.20, beat No.13 Angelique Kerber yesterday – but in my opinion that minor upset says more about the form of Kerber than Kontaveit, as the German isn’t having the best of seasons.

Priced up as the slight match outsider today, Swiatek is the bet at Evens or bigger.
