Match picks for this evening - going again at 50/1...

Tuesday 2nd August 2022

Last Thursday we came to close to landing a 50/1 treble in the Match Winner market, with two out of three underdog selections ticking the box.

With four tournaments taking place this week, there’s another packed match schedule for us to shoot at…

Here are my match picks for today. Four of these five are the underdogs in the betting. The full-house acca is worth around 50/1. I’m listing these as five individual bets, as well as the five-fold. You might also do well to mix & match these in various other multiples, doubles and trebles and the like.

Match picks for this evening…

  • Play starts from approx. 6.30pm, UK time
  • Prices from William Hill

Men – ATP Washington – Citi Open:

Mackenzie McDonald to beat Emil Ruusuvuori @ 11/10 (2.1) – McDonald made the final here in Washington last year (runner-up). The head-to-head is level at 1-1 and the Finn is just two ranking places ahead of the American. The bookies have Ruusuvuori as the marginal favourite, but this is his first match on a hard court since March.

Ilya Ivashka to beat Sebastian Korda @ Evens (2.0) – This is another marginal one, and the pick comes down to the most recent form & fitness. Ivashka has the power to shine on hard courts, and reached the semi finals at Atlanta last week. Korda is a Ones to Watch regular, but the young American missed Wimbledon through injury, and lost in the 1st round at Atlanta on his return to the tour last week. Just five ranking places separate these two, and Ivashka is the value on this occasion.

David Goffin to beat Jack Sock @ 4/6 (1.67) – Goffin had a fantastic time of it at Wimbledon, reaching the quarter finals. The world no.60 looks rejuvenated this season. As noted last week, Sock looks a little short of fitness right now. Goffin has never lost to him (two wins, and one victory via retirement).

Women – WTA San Jose – Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic:

Shelby Rogers to beat Bianca Andreescu @ 21/10 (3.1) – I’m opposing two US Open champions in the women’s today. Andreescu is one of my favourite players, but she’s still struggling to get back to the level she had in 2019. Rogers won their only previous meeting, and Shelby always plays her best tennis at home in the States. Due to her various fitness issues, this is Andreescu’s first hard-court match of the season.

Qinwen Zheng to beat Naomi Osaka @ 6/4 (2.5) – Chinese teenager Qinwen Zheng has the look of a giant-killer about her. The 19-year-old made a semi final on hard courts at the start of the season, then went on to impress on clay at the French Open, coming closer than anyone to beating world no.1 Iga Swiatek in Paris. Zheng is a player on the up. Osaka is the favourite largely on reputation right now; this is Naomi’s first match since the French Open, and questions remain over many aspects of her game, including her fitness. Osaka is good enough to sweep all that aside of course, but today, I’m with the upcoming youngster.
