Tennis Betting Advice - February 2022

Delray Beach contenders at 11/1...

Monday 14th February 2022

Last week proved to be one for the shorties. All eight of the tour finalists went off at single-figure odds in the pre-tournament Outright Winner markets:

WTA 500 St Petersburg - St Petersburg Ladies Trophy - Indoor Hard
WINNER: A.Kontaveit (7/2)
Runner-up: M.Sakkari (6/1)

ATP 250 Buenos Aires - Argentina Open - Clay
WINNER: C.Ruud (9/4)
Runner-up: D.Schwartzman (4/1)

ATP 250 Dallas - Dallas Open - Indoor Hard
WINNER: R.Opelka (11/2)
Runner-up: J.Brooksby (7/1)

ATP 500 Rotterdam - ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament - Indoor Hard
WINNER: F.Auger-Aliassime (15/2)
Runner-up: S.Tsitsipas (3/1)

Some familiar Ones to Watch names there…

Hot-shots:

  • After Felix Auger-Aliassime lost his first 8 finals on the ATP Tour, in this season’s new Ones to Watch in 2022 report we asked the question – will it be a case of 9th time lucky for Felix? It was. He won his maiden title in Rotterdam on Sunday
  • The inaugural Dallas Open played out in fast conditions, as anticipated in last week’s preview. Serve dominated. A point illustrated perfectly by the man who lifted the trophy, Reilly Opelka. The 6’11” American didn’t lose a single service game all week, rained down a cool 100 Aces – and posted a raft of 7-6 Tiebreak set scores. Including in the final, where Opelka beat our Ones to Watch in 2022 youngster, Jenson Brooksby, 7-6, 7-6
  • Anett Kontaveit has now won 20 matches in a row when playing on indoor hard courts
  • On the lower-tier ITF circuit, the 14-year-old (!) that we discussed in Ones to Watch EXTRA last week won again. Brenda Fruhvirtova has now won back-to-back W25-grade titles on clay in Argentina. The Czech teenager is starting to make a name for herself

Several of those players are in action again this week. Short prices punctuate the betting though, and certainly put me off backing the likes of Auger-Aliassime at 3/1 in Marseille, or Opelka at 6/1 in Delray Beach…

Five tournaments this week…

This week’s ATP & WTA schedule is a packed one – the busiest of the season in terms of the four men’s ATP events starting today:

WTA 500 Dubai - Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships - Hard

ATP 250 Marseille - Open 13 Provence - Indoor Hard

ATP 250 Delray Beach - Delray Beach Open by VITACOST.com - Hard

ATP 250 Doha - Qatar ExxonMobil Open - Hard

ATP 500 Rio de Janeiro - Rio Open presented by Claro - Clay

Seb and Brandon at 11/1...

For our first business this week, I’m targeting two former Ones to Watch youngsters – both of whom will fancy their chances of going deep on the fast outdoor hard courts at Delray Beach. A venue where these young Americans have done well before…

Sebastian Korda and Brandon Nakashima both featured in our OTW 2021 list. Since then, both have reached finals on the main ATP Tour. Including a runner-up finish here in Florida for Korda twelve months ago. And back-to-back outdoor hard-court finals for Nakashima last summer, including a runner-up appearance in Atlanta, USA. Brandon also made the quarter finals here at Delray Beach on his debut in 2020.

Age 21 and 20 respectively, Korda and Nakashima are two of the bright young things in American men’s tennis right now. While I’m a big fan of their 21-year-old compatriot Jenson Brooksby, too, he’s 7/1 in general here and arrives off the back of a busy week in Dallas. At a bigger 12/110/1 each, I’m following Seb and Brandon at this one. Both have a smart serving game that can take them far in close contests here, and both can also generate some impressive power off the ground, too.
