Hello 2020...

Happy New Year!

2020 is here. The new tennis season starts tonight.

And I’m excited...

I’m excited because we’ve got 10 promising young players on our new Ones to Watch in 2020 list.

I’m excited because the first Grand Slam of the year is this month. The Australian Open starts on 20th January.

I’m excited because last season saw no fewer than four first-time Grand Slam finalists – with two winning. And this year really could see a ‘changing of the guard’ with more newcomers breaking through to eventually replace the likes of Serena Williams and Roger Federer at the top of the tennis tree.

I could go on. But enough about me. Here’s what you’ll be getting:

  • Dedicated tennis betting coverage every week of the season. Including underdog & outsider picks at attractive Each Way prices in the Outright Winner markets on the ATP & WTA Tours, with tournament previews and players to follow. Plus – Match Winner advice when the odds and value look in our favour, with upsets on the cards
  • Early-bird Ones to Watch selections for upcoming major tournaments, in order to grab the biggest prices
  • Daily emails with analysis & advice during the four Grand Slam fortnights – the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open

The return of Sunday Night Club...

Most weeks, the ATP & WTA events will start on a Monday.

In order to get our Outright Winner picks in the book ASAP at the best prices, I’ll usually be emailing you with our first look at the markets and players to watch on a Sunday night.

That will be the case this weekend, with Monday 6th January seeing the first four tournaments of the season. View the January tournament calendar here.

So, throughout 2020 you’ll often be hearing from me on Sunday nights, or early Monday morning. Keep an eye on your emails around those times. I’ll be working to the weekly tournament schedule and time differences, depending on the event locations. I’ll keep you posted with each week’s plans in frequent email updates to you.

ATP Cup picks at 7/1...

Before we get onto backing individual players on the ATP & WTA Tours proper, the 2020 season begins this evening (11pm) with the start of the inaugural ATP Cup in Australia.

This is an international team event. With World No.1 Rafael Nadal as their talisman, November’s Davis Cup champions Spain go into this similar/ rival team tournament as the 11/4 (3.75) favourites.

Davis Cup runners-up Canada are 10/1 (11.00). Russia – whose team includes 2019 Ones to Watch star and US Open runner-up Daniil Medvedev – are 6/1 (7.00).

Novak Djokovic’s Serbia are 13/2 (7.50). Big names Germany and France are 8/1 (9.00) and 11/1 (12.00) respectively.

From the top nations, hosts Australia are the one I’m keen to keep on side.

In November, we had Lleyton Hewitt’s team as our Davis Cup picks at 7/1 (8.00). The men in yellow were just edged out in the quarter finals, 2-1, by eventual runners-up Canada.

We can get them at 7/1 again this week...

This time, with Australia hosting this event across Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, the team spearheaded by the super-talented Nick Kyrgios and Alex De Minaur can ramp things up and make a very strong effort for the trophy.

Against the backdrop of the bushfires in Australia, the home team (and fans) need no extra incentive to put together a strong display here. Kyrgios – often a figure to divide opinion – has pledged to donate $200 for every ace he hits. That’s an example of how much this issue is in the players’ minds.

Australia are in the tough-looking Group F, alongside Germany, Canada and Greece. However, they have the players to win that group or be a best runner-up, to then progress to the quarter finals.

If Hewitt’s side were to win Group F, they would face the winner of a weak-looking Group C in the quarter finals – one of Belgium, Great Britain (missing Andy Murray), Bulgaria or Moldova.

Most weeks on the tour we’ll be going after picks at bigger prices than this – and betting Each Way. But in this international team competition format, Australia at 7/1 Outright tick plenty of boxes as our first pick of the year.

Ones to Watch:

ATP Cup – Outright Winner:

  • Australia are 7/1 (8.00) with Bet365, Paddy Power, Betfair Sportsbook, Betway, Marathonbet, 888 Sport, Unibet, NetBet, 10Bet

Play starts in the ATP Cup at 11pm tonight, UK time. Australia play their first match at 7am+ Friday morning.

I’ll be back on Sunday night with our first Outright Winner previews & picks for the ATP & WTA Tours. There are events in Doha, Shenzhen, Brisbane and Auckland.

The 2020 season has arrived. It’s great to be here. See you Sunday.

Enjoy the tennis…

Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
