Tennis Betting Advice - January 2021

Seb for the upset tonight…

Monday 11th January 2021

In your Ones to Watch email today:

  • Match pick for tonight…
  • Sebastian Korda v John Isner…
  • Play starts 11pm…

Elena Rybakina posted a first quarter final of the season for us. But that’s as far as my player picks went in week one of 2021.

The WTA Abu Dhabi event hasn’t been without its big-odds runners though…

From our new Ones to Watch in 2021 list, I had teenager Leylah Fernandez down as an 80/1 outside chance here. The 18-year-old fell in the 2nd round.

But in that section of the Abu Dhabi draw, another of our 2021 teenagers to watch has made it all the way to the semi finals…

Marta Kostyuk – who is also just 18 years of age – has made it to the final four. Marking a main-tour first for the Ukrainian.

In Tuesday’s semi final, Kostyuk will face a player that featured in our Ones to Watch list last season, the now-23-year-old Russian, Veronika Kudermetova.

At the start of the tournament last week, Kostyuk was a top price 66/1, and Kudermetova was 50/1.

One of those will be in the final, to face 8/1 Aryna Sabalenka or 25/1 Maria Sakkari. (As it happens, Sabalenka and Sakkari were two of the five women on our Ones to Watch in 2019 list.)

So, already, in the very first week of the new season, we’re seeing the big prices show up on the WTA Tour.

We can’t pinpoint one of those with laser precision every week (!). But we’ll certainly be sniffing around plenty of Each Way prices like those throughout the weeks and months ahead.

Seb for the upset tonight…

Sebastian Korda v John Isner
11pm (UK time)

This season, I’ll be sharing my match-day thoughts with you, too…

We got the ball rolling with a 13/5 (3.6) Match Winner selection on Su-Wei Hsieh last week.

Tonight, I like our 2021 youngster, Sebastian Korda, in the Set Betting market. For tonight’s encounter against the highly-experienced, big-serving, John Isner…

  • You can read more about Korda in our new 2021 report here

Seb has impressed so far in Delray Beach, reaching his first ever full ATP-level quarter final.

This comes on the back of a first title win on the lower-tier ATP Challenger Tour at the end of the 2020 season. Which, if you roll that form into 2021, puts Korda on a seven-match winning streak.

The 20-year-old is a 6/5 (2.2) underdog against 35-year-old Isner tonight. The older American went off as the tournament favourite here, and while his massive serve still delivers him stacks of aces, he’s never won this title. The younger man can move him about this evening…

Isner’s own ATP breakthrough run also came on North American hard courts, at ATP Washington, where he reached the final back in 2007, as a 22-year-old. I remember seeing Isner’s progress unfold there. En-route to that final, he won five matches in a row by two sets to one, all ending in a final-set tiebreak, 7-6.

If Seb is to pull off the upset tonight, I reckon he’ll need the full three sets, too. Odds of 7/2+ (4.5+) appeal to me.

Ones to Watch:
