Player progress – Delray Beach and Abu Dhabi…

Friday 8th January 2021

In your Ones to Watch email today:

  • Outright update…
  • ATP Delray Beach…
  • WTA Abu Dhabi…

It’s always nice to start the year with a win. Doesn’t always happen. But this week we kicked off the new 2021 season with a satisfying underdog pick in the Match Winner market.

We identified Su-Wei Hsieh as potential value, as a 13/5 (3.6) and 5/2 (3.5) outsider against a player 14 years her junior, Marketa Vondrousova.

As anticipated, Hsieh made life tricky for her left-handed opponent. With a series of deft touches at the net, and her usual array of slices and angles.

It was a close one, but the Chinese Taipei player edged it, coming from behind to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.

Let that be the first of many underdog picks for us in the match-day markets this season…

As Ones to Watch member Andy W says:

“Good winner today to start the year off well … I like the idea that you will provide more match day value bets, as this gives us the opportunity to have more involvement with individual bets that could possibly cover the stake on the tournament bets each week (if a tournament bet wins as well then happy days)”

That’s the plan, Andy. Although it’s easier said than done, of course.

One thing’s for certain. You & I will always be searching for value. Be that in the Match Winner markets, or the weekly tournament Outright Winner lists…

Outright update…

My tournament picks will always be a mixed bag. My Ones to Watch approach is to go after appealing outsiders at attractive Each Way prices.

In doing so, if you choose to follow me, we’ll have more losing weeks than winning ones. That’s a fact. It’s part of the game.

We don’t need many Big Ones to come in over the course of a season to make it all good (as Andy says, happy days). And we have plenty of fun along the way.

Week one of 2021 is a first dip into that mixed bag…

At WTA Abu Dhabi, Jennifer Brady (16/1) was sent packing in the very 1st round.

And 80/1 & 66/1 outsider, 18-year-old Leylah Fernandez followed in the 2nd round this morning.

Both fell at the hands of 23-year-old Tamara Zidansek. The world No.87 caused a 9/2 (5.5) surprise against Brady, and was also a 7/4 (2.75) underdog v teenager Fernandez.

You might remember that Zidansek was a 40/1 pick for us in Acapulco last February, where she reached the quarter finals.

Elsewhere in the Abu Dhabi field this week, we have Elena Rybakina (18/1, 16/1, 14/1). One of the top-performing players of 2020, Rybakina started with a comfortable 6-1, 6-3 victory in the 1st round on Thursday.

Next up, on Saturday, Rybakina faces the promising teenager, Xiyu Wang. The bookmakers have our player priced as the 1/5 (1.2) favourite to beat the 19-year-old from China.

Over in the USA, at ATP Delray Beach, our solitary men’s pick for week one, Sam Querrey (22/1) got off to a good start last night.

The 6’6” American’s big serve was in fine working order, too. With Sam firing down 13 aces in a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Mackenzie McDonald, winning 83% of points on his 1st serve.

From odds of 22/1 when we got involved before the start of play, Querrey is now trading at 10/1 and 12/1. He plays again tomorrow, priced as a 1/4 (1.25) favourite to beat Gianluca Mager.

I’ll be back at the start of next week with another update for you. And I’ll be paying close attention to the daily match markets, too.

Enjoy the tennis…
