Australian Open Day 4 - take a dozen at 6/1...
Wednesday 19th January 2022
Australian Open daily email service – Day 4
After a bumpy start for some of my picks this week, it was a much better night last night. Amanda Anisimova and Victoria Azarenka both progressed in the women’s. And Carlos Alcaraz, Lorenzo Sonego, and Denis Shapovalov all made it through to round three in the men’s.
Our two other Ones to Watch picks play in the 2nd round tonight, Clara Tauson, and Jannik Sinner.
Teenager Tauson has a big test, taking on one of theform players in the women’s game over the past six months or so, Anett Kontaveit. We have the 19-year-old Dane in the book at 100/1. In comparison, Kontaveit is in with the tournament favourites, at just 12/1 with some firms right now. Tauson is 3/1 to spring a surprise tonight. That’s the match I’ll be watching when play starts at just past Midnight.
Anisimova is another 100/1 young gun making promising progress. The 20-year-old American was very good this morning, priced as the underdog to beat Belinda Bencic - but firing well to win in straight sets, 2-0. It’s a good job Amanda is playing well, too. As our pre-tournament early-bird Outright Winner selection has landed in a very tough part of the draw. Next up, reigning champion Naomi Osaka. With world no.1 Ashleigh Barty waiting in the wings after that.
The Gun Show…
After the 1st round, I said that Carlos Alcaraz had impressed me. It was the same again last night, with another exhilarating 3-0 win. And all of a sudden, the Spanish 18-year-old has got some serious muscles on show. He’s got the guns out, as they say…
Our book of Each Way outsiders look like this:
Women:
Amanda Anisimova 100/1
Clara Tauson 100/1
Men:
Jannik Sinner 25/1
Carlos Alcaraz 33/1
Lorenzo Sonego 350/1
Denis Shapovalov 80/1
Yesterday we did something a little different to our usual Ones to Watch business, and backed an older player - as opposed to the youngsters and newcomers we most often focus on. Two-time Aussie Open champion Victoria Azarenka (age 32) was a convincing 2-0 winner on the night, beating Jil Teichmann, 6-1, 6-2. Vika moves into round three.
Take a dozen at 6/1…
Today, I’m playing a little differently again. This time backing the Match Winner favourites that I fancy, in an accumulator - rather than hunting for an individual underdog or against-the-odds upset.
Going through the Day 4 list, here are 12 players that I trust to win their 2nd round matches:
Men:
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN to beat Christopher O’Connell
MARIN CILIC to beat Norbet Gombos
DAN EVANS to beat Arthur Rinderknech
ALEX DE MINAUR to beat Kamiil Majchrzak
FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME to beat Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina
ROBERTO BAUTISTA-AGUT to beat Philipp Kohlschreiber
ANDY MURRAY to beat Taro Daniel
JANNIK SINNER to beat Steve Johnson
Women:
ELENA RYBAKINA to beat Shuai Zhang
SORANA CIRSTEA to beat Kristina Kuchova
ANASTASIA PAVLYUCHENKOVA to beat Sam Stosur
SIMONA HALEP to beat Beatrice Haddad-Maia
The 12-fold match win acca pays 6/1+.
Note: I recommend using bookmakers with the ‘bet void’ rule for Match Winner accumulators (including the firms named below). Read more about this on our website here.
