The men’s final caps off the tournament tomorrow. And we should be in for a treat….
Rafael Nadal v Daniil Medvedev promises to be super-competitive.
On one side of the of the net, Nadal, the 20-time Grand Slam champion – looking to be the first man to reach title number 21.
On the other, world no.2 Medvedev, the leader of the Next Gen, and the winner of the last hard-court Major, the US Open 2021.
The bookies make the younger man the favourite. With 25-year-old Medvedev priced at 8/15 (1.53), and 35-year-old Rafa as the 13/8 (2.63) underdog.
This should be good…
My angle here is to back 5 Sets in the Total Sets market. Both men have had five-setter battles already in this tournament. Daniil has dropped sets in each of the last three rounds; Rafa in three of the last four.
More significantly, the only previous Grand Slam encounter between the young Russian and the experienced Spaniard went the distance, on hard courts at the US Open 2019 (Nadal won 3-2).
This ‘old v new’ match-up is also somewhat reminiscent of recent Major finals between the Big 3 and the Next Gen. The 2020 Australian Open final saw Novak Djokovic beat Dominic Thiem in five sets. And Novak did it again at the French Open last year, coming from behind to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas, 3-2.
The stage is set for a potential classic here. And in men’s Grand Slam finals, a classic usually means a five-set contest…
Total Sets = 5 is 5/2 (3.5) with Bet365, who also offer odds of 10/1 in their ‘Go the Distance’ market – which pays out if the match goes all the way to a tiebreak (7-6) in the fifth set.
