Australian Open Qualifying - 5 teenagers to follow tonight...

Wednesday 11th January 2023

We were right to not go too far down the garden path with the Tiebreak markets in Auckland last night. Quentin Halys once again won a whopping 94% of his 1st serve points, bagging a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ben Shelton to land our main match bet.

Notes from Down Under…

I’d said to look out for injury retirements and withdrawals this week, with the Australian Open just a few days away. And that was a factor in both matches involving our WTA Adelaide International 2 picks…

Qinwen Zheng served for the opening set twice against Petra Kvitova, and then had three match points in a row when it went to a tiebreak - but couldn’t take any of them. After that, at 6-7 down, Zheng called the trainer, and then retired. Let’s see what shape she turns up in for Melbourne next week - the Aussie Open draw is made on Thursday.

There was more favourable news regarding our 12/1 Adelaide pick Veronika Kudermetova, with the world no.9 granted a pass through to the quarter finals after her Russian compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova withdrew before the match.

Kudermetova is now 6/1 for the title. Tomorrow morning’s quarter final v Danielle Collins will be an interesting one…

Both women love to thump the ball as hard as they can. It could be a ding-dong contest, decided by who has the better winners/ unforced errors ratio. The bookies give the slight edge to our player, with Veronika around 8/11 (1.73) to progress to the semis.

I’m also interested to watch this match to get a feel for how things might pan out at the big one next week…

We’ve backed both Kudermetova and Collins at big prices for the Australian Open in recent years. Most notably with Collins reaching a maiden Grand Slam final to give us an Each Way payout last year, from odds of 66/1 & 50/1.

Both women are 33/1 for the 2023 event right now, but I feel we should wait to see the draw - and as I say, I also want to watch this match play out.

Australian Open Qualifying - 5 teenagers to follow tonight…

We’re heading to Melbourne Park tonight for the final round of Australian Open Qualifiers

There’s a lot on the line in these matches, with a place in the main draw at stake. I’m going all-in with youth here, and putting my faith in these five teenagers to make a statement in the women’s qualifying…

This list includes Brenda Fruhvirtova, younger sister of our recent 100/1 Ones to Watch pick, Linda. And Polina Kudermetova, who is the younger sister of our 12/1 Adelaide pick, Veronika.

Play starts from 11pm UK time:

  • Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva to beat Eva Lys - a 17-year-old against a 20-year-old here, and I like the form and potential of the teenager from Andorra
  • Brenda Fruhvirtova to beat Jessica Bouzas Maneiro - two in-form youngsters in this one, also both born in the noughties. I’m with 15-year-old Brenda to keep the Czech conveyor belt going, against a 20-year-old Spanish opponent
  • Oksana Selekhmeteva to beat Sophie Chang - the 19-year-old Russian has won 5 out of 6 matches so far this month, and can ride the momentum against the 25-year-old American
  • Polina Kudermetova to beat Asia Muhammad - another 19-year-old Russian here, and I’m again taking youth to triumph, against a 31-year-old opponent from the States
  • Erika Andreeva to beat Sara Bejlik - this time I’m taking on a Czech teenager, and backing the 18-year-old Russian to beat the 16-year-old challenger

Lots of potential future stars there. You might want to play these selections in standalone singles, or a combination of multiples - as you see fit. For me, this is a straight-up 1-point acca, with the five-fold worth 9/1.
