Aus Open Day 7: The comeback is on at 50/1...

Australian Open - Day 7
On Day 1 of the tournament I set out our long-standing Ones to Watch mantra…
When it comes to the Outright Winner markets…
We back appealing outsiders, at attractive Each Way prices…
At the giant odds we go for, we’re always going to back more losers than winners. As I always say: it only takes one…
Here in Melbourne, at the first Major tournament of the year. We have four big-odds selections on our side going into Friday night…
We’ve got the best server in men’s tennis right now, Hubert Hurkacz…
An in-form former Grand Slam winner, Jelena Ostapenko - who’s on a seven-match winning streak, having lifted the WTA Adelaide trophy before heading to Melbourne…
A rising star from China, Qinwen Zheng - whose section of the draw has opened up, after Top 5 names Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula both crashed out…
And an exciting teenager, 19-year-old Linda Noskova - who is through to the 3rd Round of a Grand Slam for the first time…
Noskova will take on world no.1 and tournament favourite, Iga Swiatek. A tough, tough ask. But then again, Iga nearly went out in the last round, fighting back from 1-4 and a double-break down in the final set. In Swiatek’s own words, she was on her way ‘to the airport’ at that point.
Chances are, Swiatek will regroup tonight. But I’m always happy to have a promising teenager on my side at odds of 100/1…
Two more bits of underdog business for us to do today. Selections that go against the grain - but are certainly not without merit. They might well be overlooked by many…
The comeback is on - at 50/1…
In my pre-season report, I gave an ‘honourable mention’ to Amanda Anisimova…
We’ve backed Amanda before at big prices. Including at this tournament as a teenager, at 40/1 for the Australian Open back in 2020. The young American went out in the 1st Round…
And again here Down Under in 2022, at 100/1. This time, Amanda reached the second week, with a respectable 4th Round, Last 16 showing…
As stated in the report quote above, Anisimova went into the new 2024 season as an unknown quantity. So far, she’s been impressive to say the least. Bullying opponents with her trademark big shots. And - here’s the key - looking a lot calmer and ‘with it’ in the on-court mental-strength department.
If Amanda’s newfound off-court wellness - which is well documented online, including her successful art project - continues to carry through into her tennis composure. As it very much looks to have done in the early rounds of the Australian Open this week, winning three out of three matches in straight sets…
Then Anisimova at 50/1 is a ticket we should take today, ready for a Saturday-night showdown with reigning champion and world no.2, Aryna Sabalenka…
One thing’s for sure, if Amanda beats Sabalenka - then the 22-year-old American won’t be a 50/1 shot anymore.
Before you worry that I’ve been on the crazy-juice, putting up a player who sits at no.442 in the world, as of this week’s rankings. Consider too, that, before she went on her self-prescribed break from the sport last year. Anisimova held a 4-1 career head-to-head record v Sabalenka…
Yes, the Belarusian has blazed past all three of her opponents so far. But so has Amanda. And to be fair, neither woman has been fully tested - yet…
While Sabalenka is 100% the favourite on paper. I have most definitely seen Aryna get nervous, scrappy, and unsettled in bigtime match settings before. And this weekend, she’ll be coming up against a player in Anisimova who tends to save her best tennis for the biggest stage…
