All-American Team Cup today…
The DraftKings All-American Team Cup gets underway today in Peachtree Corners, Atlanta.
This Singles event sees eight of the top American men split into two teams:
Team Stripes:
John Isner (captain)
Sam Querrey
Tennys Sandgren
Steve Johnson
Team Stars:
Frances Tiafoe (captain)
Reilly Opelka
Taylor Fritz
Tommy Paul
The team format might seem a bit alien compared to the usual tour tennis that we see. But for many of the USA players, who have come through the college system, representing your team and playing for match win ‘points’ is very familiar territory.
As I mentioned yesterday, these matches will be played as best-of-three-sets, with final-set deciders played as a Champions Tiebreak (first to 10 points, have to win by 2 pts).
Friday picks…
Looking at the four matches on Friday’s day one schedule, I like the big servers Querrey and Opelka as a match win double. And Fritz as an Even Money single against the now-veteran Isner.
Paul has won his last two meetings with Sandgren, but the latter brings the stronger recent form, having won three out of three matches in the Altec Styslinger event here in the States in the last week. The Sandgren v Paul match looks hard to call today.
Querrey starts against Tiafoe. Frances is talented but inconsistent. He can get fired up (and there will be some fans allowed into this event, some there should be a bit of atmosphere). But big Sam has had the better of him in each of their two previous career meetings. Querrey is around 4/6 (1.67) for the win.
Opelka is the last match up on the Friday schedule, so it’ll be gone Midnight UK time when the 6’11” Opelka takes to the court to face Johnson. Opelka beat him in the short-sets format at the Altec Styslinger exhibition on Monday. Johnson is on a five-match losing streak in these new events since 4th June. Reilly’s strong serving should be too much to handle once again. Opelka is around 4/9 (1.44).
Fritz has age and fitness likely on his side against the 35-year-old Isner. John will keep himself in touch with his massive serve (a theme at in this All-American line-up). But the 22-year-old Fritz has won their last two encounters, both also on hard courts as this will be. Those wins came in Acapulco this January, and in Auckland last year. Fritz is Evens (2.00).
That’s my take on today’s Match Winner markets. I’m putting these down in a double and a single.
