One to Watch at the Progress Tour Championships…

Tuesday 14th July 2020

In your Ones to Watch email today:

  • Women’s Progress Tour Championships…
  • 14/1 shot with Skybet…
  • Play starts 11am…

Slim pickings…

We’re off to the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton today. The Progress Tour Women’s Championships starts at 11am.

Unfortunately, the bookies have been slow, or even inactive, in pricing up their markets for this event.

A handful of firms, including Bet365, have got match markets up for day one.

But after spending a good time looking this morning, so far, it would seem that only Skybet have decided to go up with an Outright Winner market.

Maybe yesterday’s late news that Heather Watson and Harriet Dart have pulled out put a cat among the pigeons. Watson would have been the favourite. But let’s not make excuses for the bookmakers. The recent men’s Battle of the Brits event had a lot more coverage than this, for example.

The revised Premier event groups now look like this, with Watson and Dart replaced:

Group Elena Baltacha
Freya Christie
Maia Lumsden
Alicia Barnett
Katie Swan

Group Anne Keothavong
Alice Gillan
Katie Boulter
Eden Silva
Jodie Burrage

14/1 if you can get it…

Here’s are the Skybet prices for the Outright Winner:

Burrage 7/4 (2.75)
Boulter 2/1 (3.0)
Swan 5/2 (3.5)
Christie 12/1 (13.0)
Silva 14/1 (15.0)
Lumsden 14/1 (15.0)
Gillan 22/1 (23.0)
Barnett 22/1 (23.0)

  • Each Way terms: 1/3 odds 1-2 places

With Burrage and Boulter the ‘default’ favourites with no Watson (or Jo Konta) here, and both in the same group, too, and I can happily avoid those two at short prices.

Swan was a late addition to this line-up, having flown to the UK from her family home in Kansas, USA.

With the top two from each group going through to semi finals, there’s a clear opportunity for one of the women at outsider prices to come through Swan’s group…

My pick there is Maia Lumsden. The 22-year-old Scot had an event win on the LTA British Tour just last week, winning four matches in a row. And if she can keep the fitness levels up here, she can make it to the final four at a good price (14/1).

Fellow group members Christie and Barnett also have Doubles matches to fit in this week. Lumsden can concentrate on the Singles.

As I say, Skybet are our only Outright option here. Take the 14/1 Each Way if you can get it, or close.

Progress Tour Women’s Championship:

Outright Winner:

  • Maia Lumsden is 14/1 Each Way with Skybet

Each Way terms: 1/3 odds 1-2 places.

Play starts from 11am, live on the BBC iPlayer, website, sports app and ‘red button.’

Lumsden is a 1/3 (1.33) favourite to beat Christie in the lunchtime match, around 12.30pm.

I’ll be back tomorrow with my take on the day two schedule.

Enjoy the tennis,

Best wishes,
