Wimbledon: Day 12 – the quest for glory…
Friday 8th July 2022
Welcome to Day 12 of your Wimbledon 2022 Daily Service.
This morning’s email lands in your inbox a little later than usual. But we’re not up against the start times at Wimbledon today. Instead, we’re taking a look at the bigger picture. Including our two early-bird, big-price picks for this summer’s upcoming US Open…
There will be another new name on the trophy…
This year’s Wimbledon has been packed with storylines, and yesterday was another dramatic day at the All England Club…
After Ons Jabeur and Elena Rybakina won in the semi finals, we will once again see a new name on the trophy.
Updating the stats for the women’s ‘wide open’ Grand Slam trend that we identified before the tournament:
Maiden winners – since 2015:
Since the Australian Open 2017, when Serena Williams last won a Major title:
Since the start of 2020:
On day one of Wimbledon 2022, Ons Jabeur was 9/1, and Elena Rybakina was 100/1. Both women will be making their debut appearance in a Grand Slam final.
The quest for glory? It’s a long one…
In the ante-post market, we got on Jabeur at odds of 40/1 and 33/1 Each Way. If you’re on the Tunisian at the early-bird prices, then a half-the-odds payout for reaching the final is now assured. With a big ticket on Jabeur to lift the trophy.
I find myself almost feeling like I need to write two different versions of this morning’s email…
1) If you’ve been with me on Ones to Watch for several months or years – as I know many of you have. Then Jabeur at 40/1 or 33/1 is the latest in our line of outsider picks to do well at big prices, proving to be great value.
2) If you’re completely new to Ones to Watch for Wimbledon this fortnight. Then you might be feeling a bit frustrated. Perhaps you got on Jabeur at 9/1 or 8/1 after reading my Outright Winner preview before play started on day one. But you won’t have got the much bigger prices back in April. This leads me to reiterate the ‘mantra’ that I stated in that preview email right at the start of Wimbledon:
My Ones to Watch mantra for Outright Winner picks remains the same as ever: we go after appealing outsiders at attractive Each Way prices. And at the big odds we go for, it only takes one to make things a success…
And on Thursday last week, I underlined once again the need to look at my service with a long-term approach:
If you’ve just joined and are thinking, Tom, when are you going to send me some winners. Then my answer is the same as I always say. I am nothing if not consistent on that front. Here at Ones to Watch, at the big prices we play at, we have more losing bets than winners…
Backing the Grand Slam contenders of the future…
This is a long-term game. I can’t state that enough. If I had a crystal ball, then we’d all be millionaires, Rodney. Jabeur is just the latest in a long line of players that we have identified early on as potential big-odds contenders for Grand Slam titles…
For example, when Iga Swiatek won the French Open for us at 100/1 and 80/1 in 2020. Earlier that year, I had previously (unsuccessfully) backed her at 150/1 for the Australian Open.
And when Sofia Kenin won the Australian Open for us at 50/1, I believe it was something like seventh-time lucky in terms of backing the young American at various tournaments in the Outright Winner markets.
As for new Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur. During the 2020 season, I put Ons up in two WTA tournaments at odds of 20/1 and 100/1 (reaching the quarter finals in both). She then went in the book three times last year, at 20/1, 28/1… and then at 40/1 when reaching the Wimbledon quarter finals. Prompting us to get on Jabeur at the best prices again for Wimbledon this year.
I could go on. But you probably don’t want to hear too much more about bets from the past that are now settled. The good news is, there’s always another tournament coming up soon. Four events next week on the ATP & WTA Tours, in fact.
And on the Grand Slam front, the US Open starts at the end of August. We’ve got two early-bird selections in the book for New York already. With attractive prices still available for you to get onboard and join the quest today…
Two in the book for the US Open…
If you’re not on these two already, here’s that early-bird info for the US Open 2022:
In the men’s event, I flagged up CAMERON NORRIE. With standout odds of 150/1 and 100/1 available in February, and 80/1, 50/1 and 40/1 elsewhere. Read my original article from 23rd Feb here.
And for the women’s US Open, I put up youngster DAYANA YASTREMSKA at speculative prices last month (17th June), with 100/1 and 66/1 on offer with a handful of firms. You can catch up on my reasoning for that one here.
I’ll be back tomorrow morning with your Wimbledon Day 13 email, ready for the women’s final.
