ATP Washington update: From 300/1 to 28/1...
Thursday 24th July 2025
A quick update on our two Ones to Watch picks this week…
Teenager showing form…
Learner Tien is in a tough section of the Washington draw, but the 19-year-old is more than holding his own so far…
The American teenager has won through the first two rounds, without dropping a set. And last night’s 7-5, 6-2 win over world no.10 Andrey Rublev was one of the best results of his young career to date.
Admittedly, Rublev has a reputation for being a bit flaky - but world no.67 Tien still had to go out there and play good tennis to win the match against a much higher-ranked opponent. And he certainly did that.
Our Ones to Watch Outright Winner selections are all about getting on at the biggest and best odds. Whatever happens from here on in Washington this week, we’ve done our job in terms of identifying a credible yet little-known outsider, to outstrip their pre-tournament price…
I said 300/1 looked too big for Tien (original article here). The market now has him down to just 28/1…
Jiri in contention…
Our other selection in the States this week is Jiri Lehecka, backed at 20/1 - 16/1. The dangerous Czech came through a three-set test in his opener yesterday. Lehecka is now trading at 12/1 - 10/1.
And another thing. As of this morning, the bookies are now generally betting just 1/3 odds Each Way for reaching the final at ATP Washington. By getting on at the start of the week, we secured the much more preferable standard place terms of 1/2 the odds for 1-2 places.
This is what we do…
You don’t get trophies for naming 300/1 teenagers whose odds then drop to 28/1. But if we’re on the right side of price swings for bets like that - and we are - then we’re doing something right…
Next week, we’ll be off to Canada for the first big Masters 1000 event in the run-up to next month’s US Open - the National Bank Open, AKA the Rogers Cup. The men will be in Toronto, and the women will be in Montreal.
I’ll be in touch with more big-odds Ones to Watch underdogs for you, early next week.
