In your Ones to Watch email today:
Good morning and welcome to Day 10 of your French Open 2019 daily service.
The quarter finals start today…
Prices & positions…
We’ve drawn a blank so far with our match picks. Betting at odds of 5/1+ each time, we’re none from five.
Our match record may yet improve this week. It might not. But one thing for certain is that we have four Outright Winner picks outstanding – and all in good positions at big prices…
Karen Khachanov featured in our match advice yesterday. His 3-1 underdog win over Juan Martin Del Potro was one of two Total Sets legs that hit the mark from Monday’s four-fold acca.
The Russian is our lone outsider pick in the Men’s Outright Winner market. Backed at top prices of 200/1 and 100/1, Khachanov is now down to 33/1 in general.
Whatever happens in the next round, with Khachanov we’ve managed to find the one breakthrough ‘underdog’ player in the draw. The 23-year-old has reached his first Grand Slam quarter final. The other seven Men’s quarter-finalists have all been to the Last 8 of a Major before, and were all shorter pre-tournament prices than Khachanov.
Having flirted with backing the injury-prone Del Potro a couple of times in the last week, the bigger-price Khachanov taking him out represents a minor triumph in our quest for value.
Khachanov faces Dominic Thiem in the quarter finals. We’ll look at our options on that match tomorrow.
Three women in the Quarter Finals today…
Our ultimate goal of landing a Big One has its best prospects in the Women’s event…
We have three of the four quarter-finalists from the bottom half of the Women’s draw, all playing today:
According to the stats & current form, the official French Open website’s ‘Infosys Slam Leaderboard’ has our three players as the top-rated women in the tournament:
We’re in a good position here with three exciting prices.
Marketa Vondrousova and Petra Martic play each other. Meaning we have a guaranteed 40/1 shot in the semi finals.
40/1 Konta – saver on Stephens…
Johanna Konta plays Sloane Stephens.
To protect our original stake on Konta, today’s advice is a straight-up saver bet on Sloane Stephens to win their quarter final match.
To cover our 2-point total stake on Konta (1 pt Each Way), staking 3 pts on Stephens at odds of 4/6 (1.67) in the Match Winner market will return 5 pts.
That would leave us break-even on Konta if she loses today.
If Konta beats Stephens and goes through to the semi finals, we’ll still have a substantial 40/1 or 33/1 Each Way bet running for us. (And if we dare to think that far ahead, a win for Jo today would mean we’d be assured a player in the final.)
Looking at the match-up…
Jo and Sloane have met twice before, with both matches coming this year. Konta won both, 2-0 on hard courts in Brisbane in January and 2-1 on clay in Rome last month.
Stephens has improved since then though – with her form accelerating since changing to a new coach (and the upturn also coincided with Sloane getting engaged, with the two events just days apart).
And with Stephens the higher ranked player and last year’s French Open runner-up, it makes sense to cover our Konta stakes with a bet on the American today.
Play starts from 1pm.
Today’s bet:
SAVER BET – only place this bet if you backed Konta as previously advised
Match Winner:
STAKE: 3 pts
BET: Sloane Stephens to beat Johanna Konta @ 4/6
BOOKIES: 4/6 (1.67) with Ladbrokes, Coral, Betfair Sportsbook, Marathonbet
Elsewhere on today’s schedule…
The Men’s quarter finals kick off with two Swiss stars battling it out – Roger Federer v Stan Wawrinka is first up, followed by Kei Nishikori v Rafael Nadal. No bets for us there, but two entertaining matches in store – especially Roger v Stan.
I’ll be back tomorrow at 8am with your Bets of the Day for Wednesday, when the quarter finals continue.
Enjoy the tennis…
