Good morning and welcome to Day 11 of your French Open 2019 daily service.

The quarter finals conclude today with two Women’s matches followed by two Men’s…

We’re in the final…

It was a good day for our Outright Winner picks yesterday, with the two Women’s quarter final matches playing out just about as well as we could have asked.

Johanna Konta put in arguably the performance of the tournament, with an immaculate 6-1, 6-4 win over Sloane Stephens. We spoke about Jo’s increased mental toughness recently, and that was on display throughout this match. Playing in her first ever Roland Garros quarter final, against last year’s runner-up, at no stage did Konta wobble or let her level drop.

Our 40/1 or 33/1 Each Way pick, Konta is now 7/2 (4.50) to lift the trophy.

Marketa Vondrousova is another player looking to reach a first Grand Slam final – and bang in form right now. The 19-year-old saved three consecutive set points at 0-40 down on her own serve in the first set. That preserved her straight-sets record this fortnight, and proved the key game in this match. After that, despite a few nerves when serving for the match, the otherwise cool & calm Vondrousova kept herself just in front of our other pick, Petra Martic – winning 7-6, 7-5.

Backed at 40/1 Each Way at the start of the tournament, Vondrousova is now 9/2 (5.50) to win the French Open.

Those results mean the semi final in the bottom half of the Women’s draw is Konta v Vondrousova. And that means we’re guaranteed a player in the final at a big price – and assured of an Each Way place payout.

The top half of the draw is in action today. Konta or Vondrousova will face one of these four women in Saturday’s final (current Outright Winner price in brackets):

  • Madison Keys (12/1) v Ashleigh Barty (6/1)
  • Simona Halep (13/10 favourite) v Amanda Anisimova (20/1)

Big boys v big prices…

At the start of the tournament, ex-player & Wimbledon champion turned TV pundit & coach Pat Cash said there’s a 10% chance of someone other than the big three winning the French Open Men’s title..

The big three are of course Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Just behind them we have the younger Dominic Thiem, seeking a first Grand Slam title but already proving to be something of a French Open specialist with a run of semi final, semi final and final in the last three years.

After the bottom half of the draw played yesterday, the Federer v Nadal semi final is already in place. The remaining two semi final spots will be decided today. In the top half of the draw, today’s Men’s quarter finals are:

  • Novak Djokovic v Alexander Zverev
  • Dominic Thiem v Karen Khachanov

Djokovic (11/4), Zverev (40/1) & Thiem (10/1) are all the same Outright price or bigger than on day one of the competition…

200/1 Karen in action…

Karen Khachanov was available at top prices of 200/1, 100/1 & 80/1, and those prices held until after we’d backed him (3rd Round). Khachanov is now 80/1 at best, and 40/1 in general.

Karen is the one player left in the Men’s draw whose price has shifted over the last couple of rounds.

The 23-year-old Russian is making his first Grand Slam quarter final appearance. The others have all been here before. Our man is the outsider. But our Ones to Watch picks always are…

Khachanov plays Dominic Thiem today. Our man is the match underdog at 11/4 (3.75), with his Austrian opponent the big favourite at 3/10 (1.30).

The head-to-head is 3-0 to Khachanov, with all three coming since last autumn. But to put that in perspective, none of those previous encounters were on clay – and two were exhibition matches in Abu Dhabi. However, the one ‘real’ win did come here in Paris, when Khachanov had the best week of his young career, beating Thiem en route to winning a first ATP Masters title – as a 40/1 outsider.

Karen certainly has a chance today. He has the hitting power to stay with Thiem, for starters. And knocking out last year’s semi-finalist Juan Martin Del Potro on Monday was a big statement and confidence booster.

The Women’s tournament is where we’re more bullish about landing the Big One. But with Khachanov – for today at least – we’ve also got a big price contender on our side in the Men’s draw.

  • No further bet advice from me today. Tomorrow we’ll be looking at the range of markets available for the Women’s Semi Finals

‘Things are getting interesting’…

Talking of big prices…

I had a great email from Ones to Watch member David C last night. As well as being on our picks Konta and Vondrousova, he’s also backed Keys at 50/1, Barty at 50/1 and Anisimova at 250/1…

As David says, “Things are getting interesting”…

If teenager Anisimova beats reigning champ Halep today, then David will have all the Women’s semi-finalists and the guaranteed tournament winner at a massive price. If anyone can top that, let me know!

You can message me at: tom.wilson@oxonpress.co.uk

I’ll be back tomorrow at 8am with your Bets of the Day for Thursday.

Enjoy the tennis…

Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
