French Open – Women’s Final: 14/1 to Go the Distance…
Saturday 12th June 2021
In Ones to Watch today:
Good morning and welcome to Day 14 of your French Open 2021 daily service.
Paris classics…
The men’s semi finals produced two epic matches yesterday. In the battle of the young guns, Stefanos Tsitsipas & Alexander Zverev pushed each other to the full five sets. With Tsitsipas coming through, 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, to reach his first Grand Slam final.
The evening match was clash of the titans – and it’ll go down as a Paris classic. It was so good, the authorities even let the fans stay past the 11pm curfew to watch it…
For only the third time in his career (!), 13-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal was beaten at this venue. World no.1 Novak Djokovic prevailed, in a spectacular encounter that lasted over four hours, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-2.
I wasn’t far off with my 40/1 double on the 3-2 Set Betting scores yesterday (one out of two). Expect more drama in today’s big match…
Women’s Final – Krejcikova v Pavlyuchenkova…
This is a ‘triple-figure’ final. On day one of the tournament, Barbora Krejcikova was a top-price 175/1. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was 150/1. Wow.
And to underline just how wide-open the women’s game is, I’ll repeat the stats I’ve been talking about for the past month:
The bookies make 25-year-old Krejcikova the favourite today, at 8/11 (1.73). But with the way this tournament has gone, I’m not taking odds-on about anything…
What I can foresee though is another winding scoreboard, as both women battle nerves, emotion, and the sheer scale of the occasion: the opportunity to win a first Grand Slam title.
Age 29, Pavlyuchenkova has had 50+ Grand Slam attempts to get to a final. She’s 11/10 (2.1) to win one today.
The feeling is that former Doubles world no.1 Krejcikova is more able to handle the big-match setting. She won the Women’s Doubles here at the French Open in 2018, and also at Wimbledon.
On the eve of this year’s tournament, the Czech lifted a maiden WTA Singles title, winning Strasbourg on the clay. Incidentally, Strasbourg was the last trophy that Pavlyuchenkova collected, with the Russian winning there in 2018.
14/1 to Go the Distance…
As I say, I’m not interested in the shortest prices and market favourites here. In the semis, we got odds-against for Krejcikova to hit the Most Double Faults. This time, she’s an odds-on favourite for that bet. We could see a few nervy second serves from both women today.
The 2-1 Set Betting score has been a staple of mine in women’s matches over the last year and more. There are only two score-lines that can win a women’s tennis match: 2-0, or 2-1…
While Krejcikova is 8/11 (1.73) to win the match by any means. We can get 7/2 (4.5) for a 2-1 victory. That appeals to me. As does this one…
Bet365’s Go the Distance market is defined in their Rules as: ‘Predict if a match will reach a tie-break or extra games in the final set.’
In the case of the women’s French Open, that means, will the match go to 6-6 and beyond in the final set? There are no tiebreaks in the third set here, so they keep playing until someone breaks and wins by two clear games. And that’s happened three times in six matches across the quarter finals & semi finals this week:
The Go the Distance option is 14/1 at Bet365. Settle in and enjoy the drama…
