Serve & volley - and a 250/1 drop-shot long-shot...
Tuesday 7th June 2022
The grass court season begins this week. There are four tournaments taking place on various slick, green courts across England, Germany, and the Netherlands. Looking at the draws and taking stock of the Outright Winner prices, I've got three names on the list for to follow this week. Our first grass picks of June 2022, as we prepare for Wimbledon this summer...
Play starts from 9am UK time at ATP 's-Hertogenbosch, and 10am in Stuttgart. So I shall get straight to the point with these selections:
In Germany, the man I like is Hubert Hurkacz. Our 200/1 & 100/1 semi-final outsider at Wimbledon last year, the current world no.13 is going to be nowhere near those prices at this comparatively small ATP 250-grade event in Stuttgart. Odds of 13/2 are fair enough for me here; the tall Pole knows how to play a bit of old-school serve & volley on a fast surface, and has the game for grass. He's a reliable unit on the tour these days, reaching a couple of Masters (1000-grade) quarter finals on clay recently, and the semi finals at the ATP 1000 Miami Open on hard courts before that.
In the annual tournament at 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands, I've got two men on my bet-list. From the names at the top of the market, our 100/1 Indian Wells friend Taylor Fritz is one to follow, for similar reasons to Hurkacz in Stuttgart. The American has a booming serve, and likes a court that gives pace. He won ATP Eastbourne on grass in the Wimbledon build-up in June 2019. Odds in the region of 10/1 and 9/1 are good with me, as this looks a title that Taylor can really go for.
For a really massive Ones to Watch pick, Hugo Gaston jumps off the page at a whopping 250/1 and 200/1. Those prices might end up looking a little crazy this week. The 21-year-old Frenchman is a player very much on the up, albeit somewhat off the mainstream radar, as those odds suggest.
Hugo was an extremely convincing winner in the 1st round on Monday, 6-2, 6-1 against the fancied Kwon-Soon Woo. Granted, the South Korean made a stack of unforced errors in that match and was not at the races. But I saw plenty in Gaston's game to suggest this youngster might blossom into a tricky opponent on grass...
He's known as a clay-court talent. But Hugo's vast skill-set - including some mean slices, lobs, and drop-shots - gives him the tools to be a menace on turf, too. In a 250-grade tournament where some of the bigger names may only be using this entry to quite literally warm-up for Wimbledon, an upcoming youngster like Gaston could make a move. And at these ginormous odds, he's well worth chancing for a run here.
As I write this article - just gone Midnight - 250/1 and 200/1 is available with the firms as listed below. With 50/1 and 40/1 elsewhere. Take the triple-figure odds if you can get them.
