Wimbledon: Day 2 picks - including a 20/1 acca…
Tuesday 28th June 2022
Good morning. Welcome to Day 2 of your Wimbledon 2022 Daily Service. Play starts from 11am…
Come on, Tim…
Yes, it actually happened. Someone shouted out ‘COME ON TIM!’ during Andy Murray’s match yesterday. It registered barely a snigger among the Centre Court crowd. If you could bet on such things, then I’d have been in clover. Having forecasted the event during the walk up from Southfields station to the All England Club.
We got a bit wet on that stroll from the train to the venue, and the morning rain meant the opening day’s play was a little stop-stop start on the outsider courts. The roof was on at Centre Court though, meaning our schedule was uninterrupted…
Novak Djokovic dropped a set, but showed little emotion during what in the end was a routine 1st round victory. I guess when you’ve won Wimbledon three times in a row, that gives you a certain confidence. Djokovic remains the odds-on favourite for the men’s title, with his starting price of 5/6 (1.83) now trimmed a little to 8/11 (1.73).
Then the sun came out – and the roof came off, in more ways than one…
Emma Raducanu impressed me. All the pre-tournament talk had been about her recent injuries. Now, the media hype machine will be revved up again. Emma won 2-0, in a match that she was the bookies’ underdog to win. Granted, her opponent Alison Van Uytvanck perhaps got a little nervous (double-faulting on break point, for example). But Emma played the pressure points well, and looked in fine shape physically, too. Raducanu’s 40/1 price has now been chopped in half. One swallow does not a summer make, but British expectations are going to grow again – fuelled by a mountain of front and back-page headlines.
Last up on my Centre Court ticket, Sir Andy Murray stepped out to warm cheers and applause, as you’d expect for the two-time champion. Murray did what Murray does: chased every ball, muttered to himself, plodding around between points, and then turned on the class when he needed to. Coming from a set down to win 3-1, as darkness descended outside the stadium.
Outright Winner picks…
So, that was my day out at Wimbledon. On the outer courts, I also got a glimpse of our 200/1+ women’s dark horse, Anhelina Kalinina. The 25-year-old Ukrainian dropped the opening set, but came back well – as she’s done a few times already this year – and ran out a deserved winner.
Two other players in our Women’s Outright Winner book progressed on Monday…
Ons Jabeur was a convincing 2-0 winner. From 40/1 & 33/1 back in April, our leading women’s pick is now 6/1 to win a maiden Grand Slam title here at Wimbledon this fortnight.
Former SW19 champion Angelique Kerber (33/1 – 25/1) also started well, with a straight-sets victory. As I write this morning the German can still be backed at top prices of 30/1 with Unibet, Paddy Power & Betfair Sportsbook, and 28/1 at BetVictor, Ladbrokes & Coral.
We lost teenage 250/1 longshot Clara Tauson, with the highly promising Danish youngster once again suffering injury woes. We’ll keep her on the long-term list as a Ones to Watch contender in events to come, once she’s back in action again.
Today, 100/1+ outsider Dayana Yastremska is in action. Along with our two price picks in the men’s, Stefanos Tsitsipas (25/1+), and Taylor Fritz (80/1+).
Notes from the draw…
The men’s draw has already had a little shake-up, with the 7th seed – and last year’s semi-finalist – Hubert Hurkacz, knocked out in the 1st round. And 2017 runner-up and many people’s dark horse for this year, Marin Cilic, having to pull out with coronavirus.
Ladies’ 7th seed Danielle Collins was also a notable name to fall on day one. Recent women’s Grand Slams have provided plenty of carnage with seeds falling left, right & centre in week one. Expect more of the same here at Wimbledon.
Match picks…
Yesterday’s rain delays meant the full programme of Day 1 matches didn’t get finished, with a few to be started or completed today, on top of the 64 men’s & women’s matches already on the Tuesday 1st round schedule.
From my Monday match picks, three of the five matches were played, with two winning so far (Kalinina, and Ann Li), but Beatriz Haddad Maia losing, 2-1, which took down my 3/1 acca. Belinda Bencic is level at one set all, continuing today. And Daria Saville is yet to get out on court.
No day-one acca payout for us, then. But going back to last week’s two multiples, where we successfully pinpointed nine out of 10 Match Winners on grass, our match hit-rate stands at 11 out of 13 as of yesterday.
Throughout Wimbledon, I’ll be sharing my match picks with you, with the goal as ever, of course, to land a nice price or two…
Day 2 acca at 20/1…
The Day 2 schedule sees the top of the women’s draw in action, and the bottom of the men’s field. If all the matches get played, then the 1st round will be concluded by this evening. There are over 64 matches on the Tuesday programme.
Today’s Match Winner markets look more competitive than yesterday, and that gives us an opportunity to swing the bat at some decent prices. Looking beyond the super-short odds-on favourites, these are the six players that I like today. Three men, and three women…
Men:
David Goffin to beat Radu Albot – these two have been around a long time. Goffin has got some of his old form and zest back this season. The former Wimbledon quarter-finalist has a commanding 4-0 career head-to-head record v Albot.
Richard Gasquet to beat Joao Sousa – two more 30-somethings on show here. Gasquet hasn’t been seen on grass so far this season, but it’s always been the Frenchman’s best surface. Sousa is 0-3 on the turf this month. The veteran Gasquet can please the Wimbledon crowd at least one more time I reckon.
Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune to beat Marcos Giron – I’m putting my faith in youth in this one. The 19-year-old Dane is yet to record a Senior match win on grass, and is the slight underdog in the betting in this match – but he has all the makings of a future Top 10 men’s star. American opponent Giron is an honest competitor and won’t go away here, but lacks the top-line magic that Holger Rune holds in his racket.
Women:
Alize Cornet to beat Yulia Putintseva – these two know each other well, and this could be a feisty watch. Both women can be pretty passionate and vocal on court. They’ve never met on grass, but Cornet leads the head-to-head, 3-0, and the Frenchwoman has shown the better grass-court form in the run-up to Wimbledon.
Nastasja Schunk to beat Mihaela Buzarnescu – siding with youth again here. The 18-year-old Schunk was a winning leg for us in the Wimbledon Qualifiers last week, where she won all three matches without dropping a set. The injury-prone Buzarnescu might find the youngster too sharp for her here.
Yanina Wickmayer to beat Lin Zhu – mother-on-tour Wickmayer has good grass-court credentials, as we noted when backing her in the Qualifiers last week. The Belgian also sailed through those qualifying rounds in straight sets. Lin Zhu has little grass form to point to: 0-2 for 2022, and won 11 lost 21 for her pro career overall.
How to play…
As is your own preference, you may wish to follow those match picks as singles and/ or multiple combinations. The men’s treble comes in at over 3/1, and it’s the same for the women’s. The six-fold acca for the full house pays 20/1.
