Petra has the power...
Monday 19th June 2023
Two weeks today until Wimbledon…
It’s looking very likely the baby will have arrived before then. I’ll keep you posted as per the Daily Wimbledon Service! With your emails due to commence from early morning, Monday 3rd July.
SW19, 2023: the year of the veteran?
I’m glad we got Andy Murray in the book last week. Since Thursday’s email, Andy has won three more matches, all in straight sets. Taking his 2023 grass-court form to: played 10 won 10 - for the loss of just one set overall. With a very respectable pair of lower-tier ATP Challenger titles under his belt on British soil, taking home the trophy in Surbiton and then again in Nottingham.
Advised at 55/1, 50/1, 40/1, or 33/1, Each Way. Murray is still available today with Sporting Index Fixed Odds hanging in there at 50/1. And 40/1 & 33s available in general.
Andy’s career grass match win-rate is now up to 78.05% (won 128 lost 36).
From a 36-year-old two-time men’s Wimbledon winner, to a 33-year-old two-time women’s SW19 champion now…
Petra Kvitova at 25/1 is the next name for us to get in our ante-post book for next month’s trip to the All England Club.
The powerful left-hander won Wimbledon back in 2011 and 2014. With two quarter finals in-between.
In 2016, a terrible attack in her home badly damaged Petra’s playing hand, and threatened to end her tennis career completely. But the likeable Czech has shown remarkable courage and resilience to get back to the top echelons of the sport…
And seeing as the former no.2 is currently ranked in the Top 10, at no.9 in the world. With status as the reigning Miami Open champ, where she sprang a 100/1 surprise this March. Kvitova will definitely command a lot of locker-room respect as she heads to SW19 in less than a fortnight from now…
Kvitova got her 2023 grass-court campaign underway this afternoon. Winning in straight sets at WTA Berlin against world no.18 and former no.1, Karolina Pliskova - with her fellow Czech a 2021 Wimbledon runner-up herself.
That’s a decent pipe-opener for Petra; her first 1st round match win in three attempts since winning big in Miami at the start of spring. Age 33, and with injuries never far off in the rear-view mirror (as with Andy Murray). Kvitova picks and chooses her tournaments these days. And as with Sir Andy, if Petra could choose just one event for ‘one last shot’ at Grand Slam glory - it would without a doubt be on grass at Wimbledon…
Kvitova’s career match win-loss record on grass = 69-23. That’s a 75% figure that puts her well past to the 70% magic number that I spoke about last week…
And if we look at her career WTA and Grand Slam titles - both Majors have come at Wimbledon. And all five of Petra’s pro career grass-court titles overall have come in England: at Wimbledon (2), Birmingham (2), and Eastbourne.
Let’s get Petra in the book at 25/1 or 20/1+ today. A plenty-fair-enough price about one of the best active grass-court players in the women’s game - and one who, if fit, will arrive as motivated as anyone to get their name on the famous trophy next month…
