Wimbledon is Go!

Thursday 29th June 2023

Last time I wrote to you, my wife - as it turns out - was already in the early stages of labour…

While I was busy typing and making the case for Petra Kvitova at 25/1 for Wimbledon (a bet that is now trading at 14/1, after Petra won WTA Berlin on grass last week). My wife was upstairs, astride a gym ball, squeezing a wooden ‘pain comb’...

Later that evening, I managed to fulfil my mission to Stay Calm, piloting the car to the hospital. A lot happened after that, on what was without doubt the most amazing and emotional few hours of my life.

They say that all’s well that ends well, and that was certainly the case for us. Let’s just say, the NHS are heroes. I can never thank them enough. After a few days in hospital, mum and baby are now safely home and well. And we’re over the moon with our new baby daughter.

As a first-time parent, I’m glad I took the last few days to hunker down in the nest (as my wife says), and enjoy the first week or so of family life.

If you’re an avid Ones to Watch follower then I’m sure you’ll have guessed that the baby had arrived. In nearly twenty years, I’ve rarely if ever gone this long without even logging-in to check my emails.

Today, the news is this: all is well. And your Wimbledon Daily Service is Go!

I’m ready for action on Day 1. Lookout for your first daily email and tournament picks, in your inbox for 8am on Monday, 3rd July. And then every morning during the two-week trip to SW19…

As reported in my last Big Announcement, in May. This will be the 10th time I’ve run a Wimbledon Daily Service. And over the years, we’ve bagged some big prices and Each Way profits in the Outright Winner markets - even in an era containing all-time greats and bookie favourites such as Roger Federer and Serena Williams…

Over the years, our Ones to Watch Wimbledon highlights include:

Women:
2013 - Marion Bartoli 100/1 winner
2013 - Sabine Lisicki 80/1 runner-up
2014 - Eugenie Bouchard 50/1 runner-up
2022 - Ons Jabeur 40/1 runner-up

Men:
2017 - Marin Cilic 28/1 runner-up
2018 - Kevin Anderson 50/1 runner-up

Not to mention big-price near misses such as 200/1 shot Hubert Hurkacz in 2021, who reached the semi finals, one win short of a massive Each Way payout. Becoming the last man to beat Roger Federer at Wimbledon, taking out the eight-time champion in the quarter finals.

Then there’s our early-bird-gets-the-worm business…

For example:

  • Last year... Ons Jabeur advised as an early-bird pick at 40/1 in April 2022, having never been to a Grand Slam final before. Went off at 10/1. Finished runner-up for a 1/2 odds Each Way payout

  • This year... Karolina Muchova advised at 80/1 or 66/1 in February 2023. Since then - has made a first Grand Slam final at the French Open. Now a 14/1 shot for Wimbledon…

As it stands - our Each Way book for Wimbledon 2023:

Men:

  • Taylor Fritz @ top-price 50/1 - now 40/1 at best

  • Andy Murray @ top-price 55/1 - now 40/1 general

  • (Karen Khachanov @ top-price 125/1 - withdrawn injured - bet void with originally advised bookies)

Women:

That’s not a bad quartet to have in hand, ahead of the draw being made this Friday. Play starts on Monday morning…

And last but not least for today…

Here’s a reminder of why we go after the big prices in the first place…

Selected Wimbledon odds from recent years:

Women:
2015 - Garbine Muguruza 80/1 runner-up
2016 - Angelique Kerber 25/1 runner-up
2021 - Karolina Pliskova 50/1 runner-up
2022 - Elena Rybakina 100/1 winner
2022 - Ons Jabeur 40/1 runner-up

Stat:

  • The last 11 Wimbledon Women’s titles have been won by 8 different players

Men:
2017 - Marin Cilic 28/1 runner-up
2018 - Kevin Anderson 50/1 runner-up

While this year we won’t see the likes of Federer and Nadal in the men’s market. The women’s Majors have long been wide-open…

Maiden winners:

  • 16 of the last 30 women's Grand Slams have been won by players lifting a Major trophy for the first time

Since the Australian Open 2017, when Serena Williams won her last Major:

  • The last 25 women's Grand Slams have produced 16 different winning players

Big odds:

  • 9 of the last 13 women's Grand Slams have produced at least one finalist at day-one odds of 33/1

  • The last 11 women's Grand Slam finals have featured 8 players at odds of 100/1

  • And 4 of the last 11 women's Grand Slams have produced a 100/1+ champion

Lots of ammo for us there!

See you soon for Wimbledon…

I’ll be back at 8am on Monday with your Wimbledon Day 1 email.
