French Open: Feels good to be different, right?
Thursday 6th June 2024
French Open – Email #6
I'm away from my desk on Friday and over the weekend (not going to Paris to watch the tennis, unfortunately)...
So, I'm just dropping you a line tonight to let you know - in case you don't already know - that we've got one of our big-odds, Ones to Watch outsiders through to the women's French Open final...
Jasmine Paolini. Backed at 150/1 Each Way. An early-bird pick back in March. And highlighted again in your French Open tournament preview.
If you're on at triple-figure odds or thereabouts, then you've got a potentially wildly-profitable ticket sitting in your pocket...
The final takes place on Saturday afternoon, scheduled for 2pm UK time:
Iga Swiatek v Jasmine Paolini
After 33/1 Qinwen Zheng at the Australian Open in January, this is the second women's Grand Slam running that we've picked out a first-timer for the final...
We also did it with Swiatek herself, back in 2020, when she was yet to win a title on the tour, and still ranked outside the world's Top 50. She's now the established no.1, and looking to collect her fourth Roland Garros title...
We don't back Swiatek anymore. The odds have gone. The cat has long been out of the bag - but we were there first. And to keep the animal-themed phrases coming: the early bird gets the worm...
In 2020, Swiatek was a Ones to Watch selection at 100/1 and 80/1.
Fast-forward to 2024, and she's about to take on another of our big-odds, rank-outsider, no-one-else-was-talking-about-them-before picks. Paolini at 150/1...
If you're on Each Way, then a substantial chunk of winnings is already coming your way this Saturday.
And as for going the whole hog [more animals - sorry]...
We're on the complete underdog [and another] in the final...
The player that commentators and pundits will be giving little attention to when it comes to their predictions on the day ('I need a name from you, Tim,' etc)...
But that's okay. This is what we do. 100/1 shots aren't supposed to get to the quarter finals... let alone the semis - and then the final...
Yet, here we are. Not for the first time. And it won't be the last, either...
Sometimes I repeat these mantras to keep myself going, as much as for you:
Keep the faith...
It only takes one.
Favourites don't always win...
Underdogs don't always lose.
Here at Ones to Watch, we deal pretty much exclusively in backing outsiders at big odds in the tournament Outright Winner markets...
You won't have seen anyone else tipping up Paolini for the French Open.
Feels good to be different, right?
Enjoy the tennis. I'll be back soon, with the tours turning to the grass this month - in preparation for Wimbledon, which starts on 1st July...
