French Open update: 50/1 for a 5/1 shot...
Thursday 5th June 2025
With our big-odds tournament picks, I always say: it only takes one…
Well, it turns out that our very first selection for the French Open 2025 - an ante-post bet placed back in November 2024 - is the ‘one’ with a chance for us here at Roland Garros this week…
Lorenzo Musetti went in the book last autumn at a widely-available 100/1 Each Way (original article here: 14th Nov - Pure talent at 100/1…)...
That 100/1 price for the men’s French Open was still on offer late in January, when our women’s Australian Open 100/1 success story, Madison Keys, had us all out of our seats (23rd Jan - Your next 100/1 shot is right here…).
Going into the spring, Musetti was trading at around 33/1. Posting some superbly consistent results, reaching the semi finals or final in all four European clay-court events entered in 2025
On day one here in Paris last week, Lorenzo went off at around 25/1 - 20/1
If you’re on Musetti at any of those quotes, then you have an exciting Each Way ticket in your hand. Going into the semi finals on Friday…
50/1 for a 5/1 shot…
If you’re on at the early-bird 100/1. Then you have a very nice bet slip in your pocket. With the Each Way, half-the-odds part worth a 50/1 payout for Musetti to win tomorrow’s match…
That’s the good news. The hard work might just be beginning for our man though. Musetti faces the reigning French Open champion, Carlos Alcaraz. The 22-year-old Spanish star started the event as an 11/10 (2.1) outright favourite to retain the trophy.
Alcaraz leads the head-to-head v Musetti, 6-1.
However, Lorenzo gave Carlos a very good match in the Monte-Carlo Masters final in April - with the 23-year-old Italian winning the first set, before being badly hampered by injury. Musetti has won a set in three of their five career meetings on clay.
The bookies make our man Musetti a 5/1 underdog to win the semi final. If you’re on at 100/1 Each Way, then you effectively have 50/1 for a 5/1 shot. As well as an open ticket for the full 100/1 trophy win, should our pick get there…
We’re the underdogs - but we’re used to that. That’s how we play. And I’d rather be on a 50/1 chance than an odds-on shot in a two-horse race, any day of the week…
Grass Court Report coming your way tomorrow…
I’ll be back in touch tomorrow with our first look at the impending grass court season…
The tours don’t hang around at this time of year. No sooner is the French Open on clay over on Sunday, the grass season begins with four tournaments on the ATP & WTA Tours, starting from Monday (full June calendar here)…
It’s all part of the road to Wimbledon…
And with grass and SW19 in mind, I’ll be in touch tomorrow with my latest Ones to Watch in 2025 Reportfor you: a special Grass Court Season Preview…
See you on Friday with that.
