We’ve had an American theme to our underdog selections lately, and FRANCES TIAFOE (age 28, world no.22) in the men’s draw is one who will know he’s got a genuine shot at a first Major title here. He’s in the top section, which is literally anyone’s following the 2nd-round departure of top seed and odds-on trophy favourite Jannik Sinner. I like his big-match mentality; Frances knows how to rise to the occasion when things get box-office.
In the women’s, DIANE PARRY (age 23, world no.92) will have huge home support. The talented young Frenchwoman, with her gracious one-handed backhand, is a classic, classy tennis player. Diane won a lower-tier WTA title on clay in Paris last month in the build up to the French Open. In fact, her last two titles have come here in the French capital. She’s still very much an underdog in the betting at 100/1+, but anything really can happen here - and I do believe Parry has the talent to do something special.
