Diana, still now just 22 years of age, has since hit no.11 in the rankings - currently at no.23 - and has collected a total of five titles on the WTA Tour. As I noted back in September, we have so far somehow managed to miss the right week/ event to back Shnaider in the tournament markets. So far…
Ever the optimist (you have to be in this game - he says, over 20 years in…). Shnaider could come good for us this year. There is certainly plenty to like about her game and confidence right now:
With a new coach on board since late last summer, Shnaider is making a statement in her drive to hit the bigtime. Sascha Bajin has been part of winning teams with Grand Slam champions such as Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams. With Bajin in her player box at the French Open, Diana is this week through to her first Grand Slam quarter final
She looks to be hitting form at just the right time. An impressive win over Madison Keys on Monday is as good a preparation as you can get for facing another big-hitting, power player in the next round on Wednesday, world no.1 Aryna Sabalenka. Shnaider has been finishing matches strong this fortnight; look at these scores from the final set of her 4 matches played here in Paris: 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, and then 6-0 v Keys
Shnaider also featured prominently in my grass court report last season. A tricky left-hander with the combination of a powerful forehand, and deft hand skills at the net (honed playing a lot of Doubles). Diana’s Wimbledon chances could be compared to fellow lefty with a sliding, loopy serve, Marketa Vondrousova, who won for us at big odds at the All England Club in 2023.
We backed Diana Shnaider at Wimbledon last year, at shorter prices than she is this summer. Current odds of 175/1, 150/1, and 100/1 look very appealing as an outsider price prospect for this year's trip to SW19. In comparison to those 100/1+ Wimbledon quotes, Diana is 50/1 in general for this year's other upcoming Major, the US Open at the end of the summer.
If the 22-year-old Russian does something big between now and taking to the turf later this month - like knocking top seed Sabalenka out of the French Open in the quarter finals tomorrow, for example... then Shnaider's prices for all upcoming events will take a whack. I've always liked her for Wimbledon one day. At these prices, in this form, 2026 could be the time to shine.
And at 40/1 or 33/1 for the in-play French Open this week, with Diana three matches away from glory, I like that underdog price in Paris, too. The ‘if she beats Sabalenka’ is a huge if, of course. But it’s their first meeting, so there is no scar tissue in terms of former defeats at the hands of the star name. And should she pull off the match upset tomorrow, I would fancy Shnaider to go on to the final from there, with the injury-prone Anna Kalinskaya and the unheralded Maja Chwalinska waiting in the semi finals as a surprise package, too.
After Roland Garros this week, the grass season starts from Monday. On we go…
