Big names tumble in the desert...
Both the Men’s and Women’s Indian Wells events are shaping up for an intriguing climax this week...
Over the opening few days we’ve seen plenty of big names, seeds, favourites and returning stars tumble in the California desert.
In the ATP Masters event, the likes of Novak Djokovic (7/1), Grigor Dimitrov(16/1) and Alexander Zverev (18/1) are all already out. And Nick Kyrgios and Kei Nishikori have both withdrawn, through injury and illness respectively.
In the WTA Premier Mandatory event, Maria Sharapova (28/1), Victoria Azarenka (50/1), Petra Kvitova (11/1), Garbine Muguruza (12/1), Johanna Konta (28/1) and Madison Keys (28/1) are all also already out.
Djokovic lost to a player ranked outside the World’s Top 100, Kvitova was taken out by a 16-year-old; no-one is immune to shocks & surprises – not even multiple Grand Slam winners.
Anderson, Kasatkina and Goerges in action tonight...
So far we’ve staked a total of 7 pts on Indian Wells. Our two 1-pt picks in the match betting Total Games markets missed out on Friday but not by much – after two first sets that went the right way (the long way), both matches fell short in the second set:
Ernesto Escobedo beat Frances Tiafoe 7-5, 6-3 (Total Games = 21, we backed Over 22.5).
Karolina Pliskova beat Irina-Camelia Begu 7-5, 6-1 (Total Games = 20, we backed Over 20.5).
In the Outright markets, two of our biggest-priced selections went out in the 2nd Round – 150/1 Barbora Strycova and 66/1 Lucas Pouille.
However we still have half of our stakes standing in Indian Wells and four players who go into this week in promising positions...
In the Women’s, 80/1 Daria Kasatkina is now half that price – 40/1 and plays again tonight; 25/1 Julia Goerges is 20/1 and also plays this evening.
In the Men’s, Kevin Anderson is now the 9/4 (3.25) joint-favourite to win the 2nd Quarter. With pre-tournament favourites in that market Dimitrov and Kyrgios already gone, our 6/1 (7.00) pick Anderson has a great opportunity to push on through the draw this week. He also plays again tonight.
25/1 Cilic now 9/1...
Perhaps the biggest beneficiary of the ‘upsets’ so far has been Marin Cilic – with Djokovic out of his part of the draw, our 25/1 pick is now 9/1 at best with bookies that are still offering the standard place terms of 1/2 odds for 1-2 places Each Way.
There’s a long way to go yet in Indian Wells, but we’re in the business of finding value and backing outsiders, and we’re doing okay so far.
Kasatkina plays Sloane Stephens tonight and is 4/6 (1.67) to win.
Goerges plays Anastasija Sevastova tonight and is 4/9 (1.44) to win.
Anderson plays Nicolas Kicker tonight and is 1/9 (1.11) to win.
Cilic plays Philipp Kohlschreiber on Tuesday night and is 2/9 (1.22) to win.
I’ll be back on Wednesday with another Indian Wells update – and a look at the latest match betting opportunities.
Enjoy the tennis...
