Miami Open: Stand tall at 66/1...

Monday 24th March 2025

The Miami Open enters its second week today, and we’re having an Each Way pick at a big price…

The women’s event in Miami is shaping up with a bit of promise for us. With two players, Amanda Anisimova (backed at 66/1 - 50/1), and Jessica Pegula (25/1), now trading at around 12/1 each - after good wins on Sunday…

Especially so for Anisimova, who stopped the remarkable 13-match winning streak of 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva.

There are also a couple of teenagers to talk about in the men’s. Ones to Watch in 2025 Czech 19-year-old Jakub Mensik has made a good start in Miami. He’s 25/1 at best this morning (Unibet), but more like 18/1 in general. Mensik plays in the 3rd Round this afternoon. There's still a long way to go yet in Miami…

As with fellow ‘Czech-list’ name, Tomas Machac (now 16/1, having started double that). The doubts I have around Mensik and Machac are mainly fitness related; both seem to struggle to stay injury-free to put together enough serious tournament runs. But as we always say, things can change fast.

Back to the teens, and 18-year-old Joao Fonseca (current Miami Open price just 12/1) continues to threaten to be the breakout men’s teen star of the season, even at this early stage. The Brazilian is getting huge support from the latino fans in Miami, and there will be plenty of noisy supporters sporting yellow shirts and flags in the stands for Joao’s next match this evening - taking on Australian world no.11, Alex De Minaur.

Once again then, we have to make Price our key deciding factor. If you’d offered me 33/1 in general for the likes of Fonseca and Mensik this morning, for example - rather than 12s and 18s - I’d have been keen…

We originally got a big server in the book for ATP Miami last week, but 100/1+ outsider Giovanna Mpetshi Perricard (height: 6’8”) was edged out in his opening match 7-6, 7-6 - which is one of the most ‘big server’ score-lines you can get…

One man who has come out on the right side of a couple of tiebreak, 7-6 sets already in this year’s event at the Hard Rock Stadium is REILLY OPELKA. We’ve backed the 6’11” American a couple of times already since his injury comeback. And with a fair headwind, the 27-year-old old could make a big dent in this Miami Open draw, with the field having been opened-up by a stack of upsets over the last few days…

Opelka is 66/1 here. That’s an eye-catching price for a player who’s already posted two match wins, including an impressive final-set 7-6 victory over our recent Indian Wells finalist, Holger Rune.

As we’ve noted before, as with many American players, Reilly tends to play his best stuff at home in the States. All four of his ATP titles to date have come in the USA. Six of his seven finals overall have come in North America. Including a run to the final of the ATP Masters 1000 in Toronto in 2021, pre-injury. The Miami Open is also a big Masters 1000 event, and Opelka has more than decent outsider credentials here in my eyes.

Reilly Opelka takes on the aforementioned Tomas Machac in the 3rd Round later today. Get through that one, and who knows…
