A tale of two bagels...

A tale of two ‘bagels’ yesterday with a couple of 6-0 sets in the women’s events – one for us, and one against...

Camila Giorgi silenced the home fans in Prague, beating Czech player Barbora Strycova 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 to land our bet as the match underdog at Evens+ (2.00+). I saw the WTA news feed presenting that result as a ‘shock’ – but I think that’s stretching it a bit. That was Strycova’s 6th successive defeat and her 5th 1st Round loss in a row.

The other news wasn’t so good for us in Prague. Reigning champ and our 33/1 Each Way outsider pick, Mona Barthel went out at the first hurdle, 6-0, 7-5. She had an injury timeout during that whitewash first set, so something clearly wasn’t right.

Over in the men’s tournament in Estoril, our 40/1 tournament pick Roberto Carballes Baena got off to a winning start with a 2-0 win. He next faces Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie and is the 4/9 (1.44) favourite to go on to the quarter finals.

Back Flipkens and Pliskova today...

I’ve got two Match Winner picks for today – play starting from 12.30pm onwards – so I’ll be brief...

In Morocco, I like Kirsten Flipkens to beat Ajla Tomljanovic. There’s a clash of styles here with Flipkens a ball player and point constructer, and Tomljanovic more of a big hitter. In the past, the guile of Flipkens has always prevailed – she’s won each of their three previous meetings (plus one through retirement), including a victory on clay last season. Play starts from 12.30pm UK time.

In Prague, I’m backing a player we spoke about yesterday to win again. Kristyna Pliskova – last year’s runner-up – won her opening match 2-0 in front of a supportive Czech crowd yesterday, and she looks a good price to win again today against an opponent who has won far less matches on clay than her. Pliskova has over 100 wins on the surface, Qiang Wang is the same age at 26 but has just 14 clay match wins to her name. The match is scheduled for 2.30pm+.

WTA Prague – J & T Banka Prague Open

Match Winner:

BET: Kristyna Pliskova to beat Qiang Wang @ 10/11
BOOKIES: 10/11 (1.91) William Hill, Betway, 9/10 (1.90) BetVictor
