Madrid Masters – quarter final battle in store tonight...
Friday 11th May 2018
In your Ones to Watch email today:
Big John serves his way through...
John Isner fired down a remarkable 32 Aces last night, on his way to booking his place in the Madrid Masters quarter finals...
His 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 win over Pablo Cuevas was a war of attrition, with no breaks of serve for either player.
Isner’s win landed our main match bet yesterday, at a best price 10/11.
And we came very close to a 4/1 payout for the 7-6 Isner correct score in the first set, with our man having two set points in the tiebreak but just missing out.
Quarter final battle in store tonight...
Next up for our 50/1 or 40/1 Each Way pick is a quarter final match in a headline evening slot in Madrid (8.30pm+)...
Isner takes on World No.3 Alexander Zverev, a fast rising star who featured in our Ones to Watch in 2017 list and went on to win five titles last year. The 21-year-old German won ATP Munich on clay last week, and having made the Monte Carlo Masters semi finals before that, Zverev has won 9 of his last 10 matches on clay.
The head to head is 3-1 to the German, but Isner won their most recent meeting – the Miami Masters final in March – and each of their last three clashes have gone the distance to a final set. The scores being:
Isner 6-7, 6-4, 6-4... Zverev 6-4, 6-7, 6-1... and Zverev 6-7, 7-6, 7-6.
As you can see, there are plenty of tiebreaks (7-6 sets) in that recent record.
So far in Madrid this week, all five sets that Isner has played have been settled by the 7-6 score.
The bookies make it just 2/5 (1.40) that we see another Tiebreak in today’s match. You can get 11/10+ (2.10+) in the First Set Tiebreak and Second Set Tiebreak markets.
This could be another battle between two strong servers, and we’ll be looking for Isner to hold his nerve, hold his serve and come out on top...
Neither player has lost their serve yet this week, but unlike the match favourite Zverev, Isner is yet to break an opponent’s serve, either.
We’re effectively on a ‘free roll’ with our big-price 50/1 or 40/1 Outright Winner bet on Isner now, with our match wins this week on Isner and Kyle Edmund already covering all of our stakes in Madrid.
The 33-year-old American is the 5/2 (3.50) match underdog tonight, but with that serve, big John does have a chance...
You can watch live on Sky Sports, with the match scheduled for 8.30pm+.
Enjoy the tennis...
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
