French Open – Bets of the Day

Good morning and welcome to Day 3 of your French Open 2018 coverage…

Play starts from 10am UK time.

Nine out of 10 again…

So far we’ve named 22 players to win their 1st Round matches, and 19 of them have won. There’s nothing wrong with that strike-rate but we’ve been ‘one away’ with both of our accas, with 9 out of 10 legs winning on Sunday and then 9 out of 10 again on Monday.

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez gave us a decent underdog payout yesterday, knocking out last year’s French Open finalist Stan Wawrinka in five sets, 3-2.

Our 3/1 match outsider Danielle Collins made a good fist of it in the first set v Australian Open champ Caroline Wozniacki, before fading in the second set, losing 7-6, 6-1. I’m keen to oppose Wozniacki on the clay here and with Daria Kasatkina in that quarter of the draw, that match will be one we’ll be looking out for if it happens.

Elsewhere, the first set between John Isner and Noah Rubin didn’t go to the tiebreak that we were looking for (6-3), but we were on the right lines seeing as the next set did indeed go the distance to the 7-6 score.

Day 3…

The 1st Round concludes today with 40-odd matches on the schedule…

We get to see how Serena Williams is looking with her first appearance on clay since reaching the French Open final two years ago.

Elsewhere, French veteran Julian Benneteau will have the crowd and the romantics on his side – this is set to be his final year at Roland Garros before retiring.

For our Bets of the Day, here are the matches that catch the eye for me today…

Match Winner picks at 4/1…

Five solid Match Winner picks here with a handful of players who I make a strong case to win their respective 1st Round matches today. The 5-fold acca pays 4/1.

Men:
TENNYS SANDGREN to beat Herbert Hurkacz
DENIS SHAPOVALOV to beat John Millman
KYLE EDMUND to beat Alex De Minaur
STEVE JOHNSON to beat Adrian Mannarino

Women:
SAM STOSUR to beat Yanina Wickmayer

Match Winner – Acca:

BET: 5-fold on the players above to all win @ 4/1
BOOKIES: 4/1 (5.00) William Hill, Betway, NetBet, 10Bet

Looking for the upsets…

Two men standout for me at underdog prices today…

Aljaz Bedene v Pablo Cuevas

Aljaz Bedene looks the value against Pablo Cuevas. The Slovenian is up to a career-best ranking and is having a strong season on the clay, making the ATP Buenos Aires final and the ATP Budapest semis.

Bedene is won 12 lost 6 on the clay so far in 2018, with 4 of those losses coming against some very good clay-courters – including Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem, as well as Fabio Fognini and Pablo Carreno Busta.

Cuevas is into his thirties now and while a vastly experienced player on the clay, he’s been a bit up and down this season with 3 of his last 5 matches ending in defeat.

This is likely to be a bit of a battle with plenty of rallies but serve will play a part too, and all round I like the younger and higher-ranked Bedene to come through here, especially when priced as the slight underdog.

Match Winner:

BET: Aljaz Bedene to beat Pablo Cuevas @ 6/5
BOOKIES: 6/5 (2.20) Bet365, BetVictor, 11/10 (2.10) William Hill, Betway, SunBets, NetBet, 10Bet

Dudi Sela v Elias Ymer

In this one I prefer the veteran. The 33-year-old Dudi Sela doesn’t have much form to his name but experience can count for a lot in a Grand Slam 1st Round match and I think the Israeli looks too big here at around 4/1.

Ymer is a young player long talked about as talented and one for the future, but aged 22 that real consistent progress has yet to come. The Swede has lost all 5 of his previous 1st Round matches at this level. Sela in comparison has got past the 1st Round in 3 of his last 4 attempts.

This one wouldn’t get many headlines as an upset and certainly isn’t a glamour match, but the price looks good and Sela looks underrated here.

Match Winner:

BET: Dudi Sela to beat Elias Ymer @ 4/1
BOOKIES: 4/1 (5.00) Bet365, BetVictor, 15/4 (4.75) NetBet, 10Bet, 7/2 (4.50) William Hill, SunBets

In summary…

Here are today’s Bets of the Day (see above for full details):

5-fold Match Winner acca @ 4/1

Bedene to beat Cuevas @ 6/5

Sela to beat Ymer @ 4/1
