Ones to Watch in Madrid...

There are plenty of story-lines in Madrid this week. But I'll be brief tonight, as we want to get our men's picks in the book before play resumes from 10am in the morning...

In the women's event, our 40/1 pick Maria Sakkari had a nail-biter tonight, saving match points, but eventually edged out 7-5 in the final set by another Ones to Watch regular, the calm & talented Karolina Muchova.

Our other WTA Madrid pick is in the quarter finals. We've got the last Spanish woman left standing, and the lowest-ranked player left in the draw....

Our 200/1 shot Paula Badosa is a real fighter, and she's got a great game, too. She reminds me a bit of a 'Spanish Sharapova.' The bookies make Badosa the favourite to beat Belinda Bencic on Wednesday morning. At 200/1, we can dare to dream.

The men's event is at the 2nd round stage, and I'm getting involved with two Outright Winner picks. As ever, I'm going after the attractive Each Way prices...

With Spanish legend and 11/10 (2.1) tournament favourite Rafael Nadal in the top half of the draw. Along with the man he's beaten twice in the French Open final, Dominic Thiem at 8/1. I'm happy to concentrate on the opposite side of the draw-sheet, on the lookout for an upcoming outsider to make a run...

The players I like here are the two men that I earmarked as Ones to Watch on clay, in this article last April:

Casper Ruud @ 66/1 & 40/1

Cristian Garin @ 50/1

Over the last two seasons, Ruud has made two semi finals for us at massive odds, 150/1 and 100/1. In his last two outings, the 22-year-old Norwegian has made semis on clay at Monte Carlo and Munich.

Garin was a 10/1 winner for us on clay last year, and the 24-year-old Chilean has added another title to his name already in 2021. Taking his career tally to five ATP title wins, all on clay.

With Daniil Medvedev a big name in this side of the draw, but only just coming back from having had coronavirus, and by his own admission not at his best on clay. This is the side of the Madrid draw to attack.

Outright Winner - Each Way

  • Casper Ruud is 66/1 with Boylesports40/1 Paddy Power, Betfair Sportsbook, Ladbrokes, Coral

Each Way terms: 1/2 odds 1-2 places.

Play starts from 10am, and bookies will take down their Outright Winner markets during the day's matches.

P.S
A special mention for Wednesday for Ones to Watch in 2021 teenager, Carlos Alcaraz. On the day of his 18th birthday, the young Spaniard will play the man he calls his hero, Rafael Nadal, in the Madrid 2nd round. Fantastic stuff.

Enjoy the tennis…

Best wishes,

Tom Wilson
