WTA Strasbourg - back the old guard to deliver again...

Wednesday 18th May 2022

Good morning. I've got a match bet for us in Strasbourg today, with the players due on court from 4.30pm, UK time.

A quick word on yesterday. Outright Winner pick Albert Ramos-Vinolas (14/1) crashed out in the very 1st round in Geneva. But things went better for us elsewhere, with Alex De Minaur (8/1 - 6/1) coming from behind to win his 1st round match in Lyon.

And in the French Open Qualifiers, 38-year-old veteran Fernando Verdasco eventually sealed the match win over Damir Dzumhur. Verdasco had seven match points in the second set, but somehow threw away a 5-2 lead. The Spaniard did brilliantly to regroup in the decider though, taking it with room to spare in the end. Verdasco won 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.

Experience to show again today...

Moving on to today's matches, and I want to back another vastly experienced player to get the job done. The 34-year-old Anqelique Kerber takes on Aliaksandra Sasnovich at WTA Strasbourg, with a place in the quarter finals at stake...

Kerber has won 15 career titles, including three Grand Slams, and is a former world no.1. Sitting at no.22 in the rankings these days, that still puts the German higher than Sasnovich has ever been. The Belarusian is ranked no.45, and has peaked at the Top 30.

To be fair, Sasnovich is having a decent season, and has struck the ball very well when I've watched her this year. However, the fact remains that age 28, Aliaksandra is still yet to win a WTA title. She often gets the wobbles, for example making unforced errors or double faults in pressure situations. Sasnovich has only faced Kerber once before, and lost.

Angie is not the player she once was, but she knows how to win tennis matches, and is a big presence on the other side of the net. With the bookies going 50-50 today, I'm with Kerber.
