100/1 Paris form: my plan for the French Open...

Thursday 19th May 2022

The Over 30’s Club have done well for us this week. After 38-year-old Fernando Verdasco won for us in Paris on Tuesday, 34-year-old Angelique Kerber did the business in Strasbourg yesterday, winning her match 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

All eyes are on France for now. In Lyon, we’ve got Outright Winner pick Alex De Minaur (8/1 – 6/1) playing in the quarter finals this afternoon.

And of course, all this prep is part of the final build-up to the big one itself. The French Open at Roland Garros, Paris…

  • The second Grand Slam of the season kicks off on Sunday. I’ll be commencing your dedicated Ones to Watch daily email service, from 8am Sunday morning

100/1 Paris form: my plan for the French Open…

As ever, we’ll be going after the big prices in Paris. And the clay-court ‘Slam really fits the bill in that department…

In recent years, the annual trip to Roland Garros has been a good one for big-odds backers, to say the least. And if you’re a long-time Ones to Watch follower, then you’ll know that big prices are something we specialise in…

To whet the appetite ahead of the upcoming French Open fortnight, just take a look at these odds. The recent finalists from the Women’s event:

Last 5 years - Women's French Open finalists:

2021
WINNER: Barbora Krejcikova 175/1
Runner-Up: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 150/1

2020
WINNER: Iga Swiatek 100/1
Runner-Up: Sofia Kenin 50/1

2019
WINNER: Ashleigh Barty 22/1
Runner-Up: Marketa Vondrousova 40/1

2018
WINNER: Simona Halep 6/1
Runner-Up: Sloane Stephens 50/1

2017
WINNER: Jelena Ostapenko 100/1
Runner-Up: Simona Halep 4/1

Five of those 10 French Open finalists featured in Ones to Watch – Swiatek, Kenin, Vondrousova, Stephens, and Ostapenko.

With Swiatek now sitting at no.1 in the world, and on a magnificent 28-match winning streak… she’s just 11/10 (2.1) to win Roland Garros 2022. We got 100/1 (101.0) in 2020, which just goes to show – the early bird gets the worm.

Needless to say, I’ll be looking for more of the same at the French Open 2022. Stay tuned and keep an eye on your emails, from first-thing Sunday morning.

P.S

It’s also a big week in the world of golf. The second Major of the season tees off this afternoon, the USPGA Championship at Southern Hills, Oklahoma. Our friend the Golf Insider tells us that:

“Cast your mind back to last year and here we had a 200/1 winner in Phil Mickelson, and the players who followed him home were 70/1, 66/1, 40/1, 70/1 (again), 250/1… and a whopping 750/1!”

Wow. Just like the French Open tennis, sounds like this is a tournament where anything can happen…

P.P.S

What’s that you ask? Who am I going for this weekend? Americans have won the last six USPGA titles, and I’m going again at 25/1 for my recent US Masters pick, Xander Schauffele. He made a barnstorming late charge at the AT&T Byron Nelson last weekend, finishing Tied 5th, after posting a magnificent best-of-the-day 61 in the final round. Schauffele is 25/1 at William Hill (1/5th odds for 1-9 places, Each Way).

I’m also backing a Brit to do well at a nice price. England’s Matthew Fitzpatrick posted a very credible T14 finish at the Masters last month. And he kicked off May with a tasty T2 finish at the prestigious Wells Fargo last time out. He’s 45/1 with Bet365 (1/5th odds 1-8 places).

I’ll see you on Sunday morning for the French Open…

Enjoy the tennis…

Best wishes,

Tom Wilson
