Rocking up in Paris...
Monday 18th May 2026
It’s official. It’s a Grand Slam week…
We’re off to Paris for the French Open…
The second Major of the season gets underway with 1st Round matches from this Sunday, 24th May…
The Qualifying rounds started today. Dozens of men and women are in action on the famous Roland Garros terre battue courts as I write this Monday afternoon…
Before attentions fully turns to the French capital, there are four tournaments taking place on the ATP and WTA Tours this week…
I don’t like calling these ‘warm up’ events for the French Open, as they are fully-fledged ranking events in their own right:

The usual week-before-a-‘Slam note: watch out for injury withdrawals, with many of the top players having at least one eye on Roland Garros next week…
Last year, the week before Paris produced a 25/1 champion in Hamburg, and a 33/1 runner-up in Strasbourg. Evidence once more of underdogs prevailing in such circumstances (in 2024, this week on the tour served up a 40/1 finalist, and a 33/1 first-time ATP champion).
If I spot any outsiders that get the antenna twitching this week, I’ll deliver them to you via email of a morning, as early as possible before play starts…
One thing we won’t have to worry about during the French Open is the Outright Winner market disappearing during sociable hours. Unlike the weekly ATP & WTA events, bookies keep their Outright market live during play at the Grand Slams.
With the tournament draw being made in Paris later this week, allowing us to map out initial paths through the field for potential Ones to Watch contenders. You and I will be making our next French Open moves ahead of the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend – way before a ball is struck in the 1st Round. Look out for an email on Friday, if not before…
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
