As posted on the WhatsApp channel last night, I’ve got a Ones to Watch pick for us today - and that’s TATJANA MARIA at 20/1 Each Way to win WTA Rabat…
The German veteran was a convincing winner in her 1st round match on Tuesday, and the 38-year-old world no.52 looks to have a very winnable route through the draw in Morocco this week.
Maria has one of those awkward games that can wrongfoot opponents; a mixture of slice, power, and style that has reaped rewards in a variety of situations before.
The mother of two has most famously made a splash in the bigtime on grass - reaching the Wimbledon semi finals in 2022, before winning the prestigious Queen’s Club title as a 100/1 rank outsider last summer…
However, Tatjana’s skills can translate to clay, too. Two of her four career WTA titles have come on clay in Bogota, Colombia (with the other two on grass in Europe). That’s a mixed bag that matches the German’s quirky, underdog, under-the-radar status in the sport…
With this week’s pre-French Open field looking there for the taking for an unheralded player to hit form on the clay here in Rabat, and snaffle up some much-coveted silverware at this level (WTA 250, being the lowest tier on the main tour, compared to Grand Slam which is the top grade). Odds of 20/1 appeal for Tatjana Maria. She was the same price pre-tournament, before winning her opening match in straight sets with relative ease…
