Make it Max this afternoon...
Thursday 13th October 2022
Good morning. The less said about Karolina Pliskova's performance last night, the better (another sluggish performance). And in the 1st round in San Diego, my 100/1 pick Alison Riske-Amritraj somehow conspired to lose from 1-6, 0-4 ahead... which pretty much sums up how things have gone for us lately. Four more tournaments next week - and one nice run from a big-price Ones to Watch player will get us pumped up again.
For today, I've got an upcoming teenager to get behind in the ATP Challenger event indoors at Ismaning, Germany.
Max Hans Rehberg turned 19 just last month, and the week after his birthday, he went out and won a lower-tier Futures title on indoor hard courts. Granted, he didn't face anyone ranked inside the world's top 400 there. But this week in the 1st round in Ismaning, a 6-3, 6-4 win over 22-year-old world no.108 Tomas Machac - in which Max didn't give up a single break point opportunity to his opponent - looks like a noteworthy piece of below-the-radar form.
The German teenager, ranked no.596, can be expected to climb the rankings as time goes on. The same can't be said for his 35-year-old Dutch opponent this afternoon, with Robin Haase - once as high as no.33 - now down at no.303 in the rankings. There was a time many years ago when Haase featured in Ones to Watch a few times. Personally, I had a big match win on him some time around 2007. But that was a long time ago, and the injury-prone Haase no longer has age on his side.
The bookies make today's match around 50-50. I like Rehberg here, with Bet365 a best price of Even Money.
