Big-price update: Ones to Watch at 200/1 and 80/1...

Wednesday 11th October 2023

It was a tale of two final-set tiebreakers in Shanghai yesterday…

Our 300/1 Chinese outsider Zhizhen Zhang gave another excellent account of himself. But he was just edged out, by the closest of score-lines. Pipped for a place in the quarter finals by Hubert Hurkacz, with the Pole – a heavy pre-match favourite – prevailing 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.

A deciding-set ‘breaker went our way for our other big-odds Ones to Watch pick, though…

Shelton surging in Shanghai…

Ben Shelton, in the book at 50/1 – 100/1 last week, came from a set down to beat world no.4 Jannik Sinner, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6. That was the biggest win of young Ben’s career to date, by ranking. And it came on the day the fast-rising American celebrated his 21st birthday.

I’ve commented a few times this year that Ben likes the bigtime. And he said it himself yesterday. Speaking after that clutch victory over Sinner, and referencing the atmosphere in the Shanghai stadium, Shelton declared:

“I am addicted to playing on the big stages”

Shelton moves on to the Rolex Shanghai Masters quarter finals, where the world no.20 will face a fellow American, 23-year-old world no.26 Sebastian Korda. The bookies make that encounter 50-50, with the players priced at 10/11 (1.91) apiece in Bet365’s match market.

That match is scheduled for late morning Thursday, UK time. You can watch live on Amazon Prime Video.

In last night’s updated Shanghai Outright Winner markets, Shelton had been chopped to 7/1. After top seed and favourite Carlos Alcaraz was knocked out today, that price will be even shorter when the revised prices go up this evening.

We have a potential whopper on our side in Shanghai. One thing’s for sure with Ben – he’ll give it his all. The exciting young lefty has shown his ‘bigtime’ mindset with runs to the Australian Open quarter finals and US Open semi finals this year. Still relatively fresh out of college tennis, Shelton is questing for his first ATP title…

And with those two big 2023 Grand Slam runs in the tank, we’re already on young Ben to go all the way at giant odds at the next Major…

Australian Open 2024: big-price update…

Last month we got on Ben Shelton at some standout early prices for the Australian Open 2024 (read more here). That event takes place in January. Plenty of time to still scoop up any eye-catching odds between now and then…

As I write, while Shelton is 66/1 (Betway) and 50/1 with firms who are offering an Australian Open 2024 market, Unibet are an industry-best 80/1.

Unibet are also a standout 200/1 for our early-bird women’s Australian Open 2024 pick, Linda Noskova. With the Czech teenager, who turns 19 next month, now 66/1 (Bet365, Betfred) and 50/1 elsewhere.

As ever, if you’re not on already – the advice is to take the best prices you can get.

  • Each Way terms: 1/2 odds, 1-2 places

We’ve got a busy week coming up next week, with six tournaments taking place. Keep an eye on your emails.
