Two in the quarters…
Thursday 13th September 2018
In your Ones to Watch email today:
Monica and Ajla making progress…
A quick update on this week’s Ones to Watch picks…
In Quebec, our 12/1 shot Monica Puig is through to the quarter finals, after winning her opening two matches.
Monica has yet to lose a set, although she came close last night – fighting backing from 1-5, *0-30 down to take the first set 7-5 v Madison Brengle (* denotes server). Her American opponent didn’t win a single game after that early burst, and retired injured at 0-3 down in the second set. Puig will play the winner of tonight’s match between American teenager Sofia Kenin and Canada’s Francoise Abanda.
In Hiroshima, 10/1 pick Ajla Tomljanovic is also through to the quarters without losing a set. She won her 1st Round match 6-4, 6-1, and the 2nd Round 7-5, 6-4.
Next up comes a tricky opponent in Su-Wei Hsieh. These two have never played each other before but the 32-year-old from Taiwan can be an awkward opponent; she’ll bring the racket skills, Tomljanovic will bring the power. In the Match Winner betting, the bookies make our player the 4/5 (1.80) favourite to take it.
Prices on our side…
I call our picks ‘Ones to Watch’ for a reason. They are exactly that. They are not the household-name favourites. There is no crystal ball. The outcome of tournaments is not predetermined. I name & explain players to follow at attractive outsider prices. And the prices are key…
This week we have two players through to the quarter finals.
In the WTA Quebec event, Puig was 12/1 (13.00) on Monday and she’s now the 4/1 (5.00) tournament joint-favourite. Meanwhile the pre-tournament 11/4 (3.75) market leader Aryna Sabalenka was dumped out in the 1st Round.
In the WTA Hiroshima Outright Winner market, Tomljanovic has gone from 10/1 (11.00) when we backed her to today’s price of 6/1 (7.00) at best.
We have the prices on our side. Not for the first time this season, we have players in the quarter finals. What happens from here on in this week’s tournaments, no-one knows. But one thing is sure: we have players going for us at good prices.
Next week there are five more tournaments across the WTA & ATP Tours. And there will be ‘Ones to Watch’ for us in those events, too…
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
