The Great Wall of China…

Forgive the pun. But ‘the wall’ is a familiar phrase in tennis. Used to describe a player that just keeps on getting the ball back…

Thursday afternoon’s match between Alex De Minaur and Andy Murray saw two walls, bouncing off each other for 2 hours and 42 minutes…

It was a good match, with some great rallies. In the end, the new kid on the block prevailed.

The 20-year-old De Minaur – living up to his nickname as a speed ‘Demon’ on court – eventually wore his 32-year-old opponent down, winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Murray played very well. He may have a metal hip now, but Andy is still a fantastic tennis player. Clearly, he’s not finished yet.

But it’s Alex that moves on to the quarter finals. The Australian was our ‘One to Watch’ at ATP Zhuhai this week (16/1 Each Way). The bookies now make De Minaur 9/2 (5.50) to go on and take the trophy, and an 8/13 (1.62) favourite to get past Borna Coric tomorrow.

Coric is another youngster who has been a regular feature in our Ones to Watch lists in recent years. The 22-year-old hasn’t had a particularly good season. But the talented Croatian has come alive a bit at the start of autumn, reaching the final & finishing runner-up in St Petersburg last week.

De Minaur and Coric have never played before. The odds are on our man’s side. The match will be live on Amazon Prime Video on Friday afternoon, 12.30pm+ UK time.

  • Next week we have big tournaments to look forward to in Beijing and Tokyo. I’ll be looking at the draws and naming players and prices to follow, ready for the start of the week

Enjoy the tennis…

Best wishes,
