Three players to follow in Asia this week…
The tennis tour is relentless. As I write, the US Open is still going. But the sport rolls on. The Asian swing of the WTA Tour heads to China and Japan with three hard-court tournaments all getting underway on Monday morning.
I’m about to tune into the men’s final in New York – so I’ll be brief. But with play starting from 4am UK time, I wanted to get this week’s preview to you sooner rather than later.
Ones to Watch…
Here are three players I like in the Outright Winner markets…
Sofia Kenin – WTA Zhengzhou
This is a new Premier level event on the tour. A few big names are here, like Karolina Pliskova and Elina Svitolina as the joint favourites at 4/1 each, and other well-known players such as Angelique Kerber and Kiki Bertens.
We’ve seen the strong-willed youngsters prevailing this summer with Bianca Andreescu the obvious and most recent example this weekend. Kenin is cut from the same cloth. The 20-year-old American has reached three finals already this season, winning two of them. And the girl they call Sonya also made back-to-back semi finals in the run-up to the US Open.
Magda Linette – WTA Nanchang
At the age of 27, Linette has reached a career high of No.53 in the world. The Pole won her second WTA title this summer – five years after her first one. Magda hit form with an 8-match winning streak at the Bronx Open in New York to come through qualifying and lift the trophy. There was no shame in losing to World No.1 Naomi Osaka at the US Open. And with two weeks since then to get ready for this trip, Linette can go well at a small-scale event once again.
Anastasia Potapova – WTA Hiroshima
This 18-year-old Russian is another young player we’ve been following this season. Potapova is on our Ones to Watch in 2019 list, and in the weekly tournaments we’ve got her into two semi finals so far. Still improving – and with a very winnable looking draw this week – the teenager can go one better and make a final.
