Our Rome outsider - and next week's tournaments...

In your Ones to Watch email today:
Our Rome outsider…
It hasn’t been a vintage week for our Ones to Watch players.
Anett Kontaveit and Iga Swiatek gave particularly lacklustre performances in Rome.
However, ever the optimist, I’d counter that by saying that having reached the WTA Palermo final for us in the first tournament back after lockdown, Kontaveit doesn’t owe us much right now. I’m still hopeful that she’ll break through the mental barrier to deliver at the biggest tournaments. She certainly has the weapons to go far.
And Swiatek, still a teenager, will give us plenty more opportunities to back her in the 33/1 bracket. Not least at the French Open coming up at the end of this month (27th Sept).
We’ve got one player left in Rome, then, and he’s the biggest price of the lot…
Casper Ruud was won through the 1st & 2nd rounds with two good wins. I like his on-court attitude. The 21-year-old Norwegian was a top price 150/1 and 100/1 when flagged up on Sunday night. He’s now 40/1 in general.
Today he faces a big name in Marin Cilic. But this being on clay, the bookies have our youngster as the 4/6 (1.67) match favourite to prevail against the tall Croatian, who has had his best results on hard courts.
Talking of big names, Clay Court King, Rafael Nadal is in the opposite side of the draw, and odds-on at 8/13 (1.62) to win the whole tournament. Novak Djokovic is 2/1 (3.0).
Plenty of other well-known players are already out though. Including Stefanos Tsitsipas, Milos Raonic, Stan Wawrinka, Andrey Rublev, and David Goffin.
Ruud is one to watch in clay court events from here on. Let’s see if he can keep the run going in Rome this week.
Coming up on Sunday…
There are two more clay court tournaments for us next week, as we build up to the French Open.
ATP Hamburg and WTA Strasbourg will both be in our sights as we tackle the Outright Winner markets in our ‘Sunday Night Club’ email this weekend. As ever, we’ll be looking to hunt out some Each Way value.
See you on Sunday.
Enjoy the tennis…
Best wishes,
Tom Wilson
