US Open Day 14 – Djokovic v Medvedev…
Sunday 12th September 2021
In Ones to Watch today:
It was another crazy night in New York. The all-teenage final was a special occasion. And while it didn’t quite ignite into the three-set classic that I was hoping for. In the case of Emma Raducanu’s straight-sets march to the US Open title. You just have to say: too good.
Top-level sport is a brutal world. What comes next for the 18-year-old will be interesting and exciting to watch. We won’t see odds of 100/1 for Emma for a while, that’s for sure.
Raducanu had all the answers at Flushing Meadows, over nine consecutive matches. Becoming the first player – female or male – to win a Grand Slam as a Qualifier.
Emma went through the entire draw without having to face a single Top 10 player. That’s not her fault. It shows just how wide-open women’s tennis is these days.
More big-odds opportunities on the horizon…
You & I will be going after some promising youngsters at massive odds again at next year’s Majors. And the current 2021 season is far from done yet, by the way…
The autumn schedule has plenty of tournaments on the schedule. Starting on Monday, the WTA Tour picks back up, and we’re off to Luxembourg and Slovenia. The latter is a new event on the calendar. The former has been the scene of some 100/1 fun before. Rest assured, we’ll be taking a look at the draws and prices this coming week.
Then, in October, it’s a very welcome return for Indian Wells. The annual trip to the Californian desert for the ‘fifth Major’ usually takes place every March, forming half of the Sunshine Double with the Miami Open. The pandemic has altered that schedule in recent times.
It’s going to be great to be back at Indian Wells for this dual men’s & women’s ‘Masters’ 1000 event next month. Again, we’ve seen massive prices here before – including a 28/1 winner (Bianca Andreescu) and 80/1 runner-up (Daria Kasatkina) for ourselves.
Going back to today’s tennis, it’s the final day of the US Open 2021…
Teenagers in the Doubles…
After yesterday’s teenage drama, there will be two more excellent young women’s players on court this evening. With 17-year-old Coco Gauff & 19-year-old Caty McNally teaming up in the Women’s Doubles final (6pm)…
The American teenagers take on two 30-plus veterans. Sam Stosur is 37 years old, and her Doubles partner Shuai Zhang is 32.
Both pairs have stormed through to the final without dropping a set between them. It should be a good match.
After that, the main event is the Men’s Singles final…
Djokovic v Medvedev…
World no.1 Novak Djokovic is going after the Calendar Slam. The man that stands in his way is Next Generation leading light, Daniil Medvedev.
The 25-year-old Russian, who is no.2 in the world, will certainly go out there believing he can beat Djokovic. He’s a confident player, and as we’ve noted before, Daniil is not afraid to take Novak on at his own game. That could mean some very long rallies, and a war of attrition…
These two met in the Australian Open final in January, and the Serbian won 3-0. But barring that straight-setter, Djokovic’s recent big-time encounters with Next Gen players have shown the new boys are getting closer:
And last year…
In today’s Match Winner betting, Djokovic is 4/11 (1.36) to make history and make it four out of four Grand Slam trophies this season. Novak says he’s going to treat this like it’s the last match of his life. This is a man on a mission…
Medvedev has the right mental attributes to want to stop the Novak party. He’s an awkward, smart, dogged competitor. The upset is 9/4 (3.25).
Ordinarily, I’d be on the underdog side of a 3-2 win here. I’ve been burnt a couple of times that way recently, though. And as that list above shows, with a quartet of 3-2 thrillers all going the way of the world no.1. Djokovic has the ability to do what the great champions do: find a way to win.
Total Set = 5 is around 5/2 (3.5). I’m for Djokovic 3-2 in the Set Betting market. Available at 6/1 with Boylesports, and 5/1 in general. Despite my underdog DNA, when I close my eyes and visualise the outcome here, I see Djokovic holding the trophy in the air – in a late finish…
