US Open: Day 13 – back the underdog tonight…
Saturday 10th September 2022
Welcome to Day 13 of your daily US Open service. Play starts at 9pm, UK time…
We got the result we wanted last night, with Casper Ruud beating Karen Khachanov 7-6, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, to move into the US Open final.
As I always say with our Ones to Watch tournament picks – it only takes one…
Backed at 66/1 and 50/1 Each Way on Day 1 last week, we’re now guaranteed an Each Way payout from Ruud at half the odds.
And of course, we also have the 66/1 or 50/1 big ticket riding on the Outright win in the final – a price that is now just 7/4 (2.75).
Ruud will face teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz in the final tomorrow night.
Friday’s semi final matches also gave us another Tiebreak in the Match payout. With Ruud and Frances Tiafoe both winning the opening set via the 7-6 score in their respective matches (Alcaraz beat Tiafoe 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3).
Women’s Final – Iga Swiatek v Ons Jabeur…
It’s the women’s final tonight, Swiatek v Jabeur, with the players due on court at 9pm, UK time.
After all the recent seed-slaying carnage and big-odds unpredictability in the women’s Grand Slams, this year’s US Open has ended up with the season’s two most consistent players in the final…
It’s the world no.1 Swiatek v world no.5 Jabeur. Swiatek won the French Open at the start of June, and Jabeur was runner-up at Wimbledon in July.
The career head-to-head record is tied at 2-2.
We’re all set for what should be an enthralling final this evening. My take on this match is a pretty straightforward one, reading the form-lines as follows...
Swiatek has got through to the final without being at her best. On the one hand, that shows how good a player she is, mentally, physically, and technically. Winning when not playing your best tennis is a nice trait to have. On the other hand, the Pole is not in the menacing form we saw at the start of the summer, and you have to wonder how many times she can keep escaping from matches when behind on the scoreboard.
In the round of Last 16, Iga came back from a set and a break of serve down to beat Jule Niemeier. In the semi final v Aryna Sabalenka, the 21-year-old again lost the first set, and had to claw her way back from a 2-4 deficit in the decider.
In comparison to that stressful run…
Jabeur has got better as the tournament has gone on. Winning through each of the last three rounds – Last 16, quarter final, and semi final – in straight sets.
This US Open run has been a lot more low-key than the Tunisian’s ‘destiny’ attempt at Wimbledon this summer. Where the pressure Ons put on herself to take the trophy – publicly declaring multiple times that winning the trophy was her intention – ultimately caught up with her, losing the final when going in as the favourite on the day. Jabeur also talked up her French Open ambitions in May, only to fall flat in the 1st round. The 28-year-old looks to have definitely learned from those experiences.
Going off as the underdog this time, having reached back-to-back Grand Slam finals and keen to now knuckle down and win one, this situation might just suit Jabeur well. I like the underdog today.
