Our midweek plans - and a note on Emma Raducanu...

Monday 23rd September 2024

I’m sticking to my guns…

We were right to oppose Emma Raducanu last week.

Yes, the 21-year-old Brit knocked out our 40/1 pick Yue Yuan in the round of 16 at WTA Seoul. But Raducanu then only managed to win one more game in the tournament – retiring injured after losing the first set of her quarter final match, 6-1.

That comes after Raducanu made a point of saying she had been planning for the Asian swing all season, and was intending on playing as many events as she could this autumn.

Fair enough if injury strikes. But the latest comments to the media have gone back to saying she’d been carrying injury ‘niggles’ all along. Which is what I suspected…

It’s just one of a growing line of somewhat baffling after-the-event comments from Raducanu. Some might call them excuses…

I’m not meaning to stick the boot in. If you’re a long-time Ones to Watch follower, then you’ll know I rarely do that. And after all, not many people can say they’ve won the US Open as a teenager. Emma’s tennis talent is not in question. But…

Earlier this year, my ears pricked up (and my eyebrows were raised) when Emma said, after losing in Doha, that she might need to practise more outdoors… that’s pretty mind-boggling to hear from a pro player, if you ask me.

We’ve also seen comments such as playing too much/ not playing enough. ‘Tweaks’ to the training schedule. A revolving door of coaching staff.

And of course, it’s unfortunate if injuries strike…

I hinted at Raducanu being ‘flaky.’ I hope she turns it around. The BBC already report on Emma’s every move. Perhaps I shouldn’t joint in…

But my business is betting. And as far as that’s concerned, the advice has to be to avoid backing Raducanu for the time being…

Coming up in Ones to Watch this week:

We have midweek plans in Asia. Three tournaments start midweek, across Wednesday and Thursday. Including both the ATP & WTA Tours heading to Beijing

There’s also a men’s event in Tokyo. I’ll be studying the draws, and running the rule over the Outright Winner markets and Each Way prices, as ever. I’ll be in touch Wednesday or Thursday with my thoughts and findings…
